A heads up for VOIP users / test alarms properly...

May 08, 2008,23:09 PM

First, glad to hear that there were no injuries.

If you have a nomadic VOIP line and/or have moved house recently (e-billing follows you automatically) then do make sure that your service provider has up to date address details so that emergency services can respond to calls. Such an address problem may have been a contributory factor in the recent death of an Alberta toddler.

Smoke detectors and other equipment - batteries have been mentioned but don't wait for low battery alarms - test them frequently. The smoke detector test button ** is not really a test ** , use artificial smoke (or (at a pinch) a toaster) to test them. They are like software or any other system... if it hasn't been tested then it doesn't work.

the "test" isnt really a "smoke test"; it is merely a batt. test! And if you install hard wired smoke sensors, Graham, use sensors that have a battery backup system installed. Great to read that no personal harm was done! Cheers, Edwin

Wow, Graham
