Before Seiko created Spring Drive, we had two choices -- a mechanical watch with traditional character and autonomy (and relative imprecision) OR we got an electronic or quartz watch that was up to ten times more accurate (but required a battery). In 1999...  

I am nevertheless astonished to see this slimmer movement first in such a gigantic watch with a case thickness of 16mm.

And why does a diver need long running time? But there will be other choices coming, I’m sure. They have to be careful not to overlap these 60th releases. Cazalea
