It's GS SBGV009, a remake of vintage 57GS (the second generation GS) from 1964.
And you are absolutely spot on about the "grab and go". This is made by Seiko Epson which focuses on advanced timekeeping technology (quartz, solar GPS, etc.) and known for their philosophy of practicality. Highly accurate quartz movement with very minimum maintenance. The primary part of the movement is sealed tightly so that it does not need service for another 50 years. That's practicality at its best. Only regular battery change every 3 years.

Great post and pictures -- thanks for taking the time. The GS Day-Dates have been a favorite for some time -- which model is this? I don't think the Day-Dates are available in the USA, if I recall, but can be ordered from Japan. John
