Grand Seiko Shopping in London
I have been visiting Grand Seiko dealers as I shoot around the planet this summer. The last one was in Seattle -- now I am in London at Selfridges on Oxford Street. I tried on a Spring Drive Chronograph:
It's pushers are large but the feel is great. And the bracelet is superb. I have at least 10 GSs with bracelets and this one is best of all of them. Then I took a look at several others in the case:
They had a generous selection and a dozen or more in the drawer below. There was another case for the Astron GPS watches:
And a completely separate Seiko presence in another room.
I visited 3 times over my long stay (hotel nearby). Each time I talked to a different person, and each time they knew next to nothing about the watches. No one could explain the Spring Drive.
"A different style of watch movement where the mainspring doesn't drive the hands; another smoother spring drives them" was the best of the explanations, and as he said it, even he knew it was nonsense. "Or something like that, I dunno."
Perhaps the dedicated Seiko boutique is a good idea ...
In Selfridges defense, they had thousands of watches from many dozens of brands in that room -- including another of those chocolate JLC Reversos! That watch is calling my name!
I trudged back through the rest of the brands, made a quick stop in the food hall, and went home for a quick snack before packing to head home. Travel can be very tough, but it can be fun too.
