Dont forget, the Dollar was a strong currency, one Dollar was four DM (now two Euros). Now the Dollar is a little bit more than one Euro. Till 1971 they only had Dollar in the value of their gold reserves, Nixon stopt this. This was the begin of Dollar fall and they cannot stop this.
In this years Rolex sold their watches cheaper in USA, i know this because the PX Shops for the american Military in Germany, also sold Rolex. So this watch was about DM 4000,- for Americans, in Dollar!
In a german AD this watch was about DM 6000,- , a lot of money at this times. 25 years after the 2.WW the Germans were poor people and for one month work they make DM 500,-.
