Rolex

Based on the serial number...

...I believe it was made in 1938, but I could be wrong. If I am, I'm sure someone more familiar with Rolexes will correct me.

I understand your desire to change the dial to something that better fits your taste, but most collectors would much rather prefer the watch with the original dial. You may want to consider that before pursuing a replacement. That said, it's your watch so you should do whatever makes you happy.

As far as it stopping occasionally, it definitely could use a servicing, which may be as simple as a cleaning but could go beyond that. I don't know Rolex's policy for maintenance of these vintage pieces (I once sent them a 1940s watch that needed a hairspring and they sent it back saying that they couldn't do it...I had it done by a local watchmaker). I'm sure someone else here can tell you how Rolex deals with vintage watches. But if they follow the same policies that they do for more current models, they won't agree to just clean it, they will require you to replace any parts they determine are in need of replacement. A local watchmaker will normally just do a cleaning if you insist. Not that I recommend that...it would always be best to let them provide whatever maintenance is required, but I know sometimes budget is a concern.
