Richard Mille: true high horology or marketing hype?

 By: marketsurfer : September 20th, 2011-16:29
I'm really not sure what to think of Richard Mille. Wanted to get the opinion of the true experts on this board. Is the brand true high horology, marketing hype or something in between ( my thoughts). What's your opinion? Thanks! Dave

Mixed bag depending on price point?

I find the movements in their "entry level" pieces to be inappropriately pedestrian for the money but cannot help but admire and covet their > $100k offerings. _john

Pretty much what I'd have said

They have a nice, coherent look (even if the new diver series strains that look to the very edge), but there's a break between the time-only/modular chronographs and the high-end magic... A

The simpler models may offer only the essence . . .

. . . and not the substance of the more technically elaborate models that established Mille's reputation . . . . . . but, shallow creature that I am, the essence would be enough for me ;-) . . ....

I'm sure there's some horogical expect

with RM watches but judging by what most have seen with their celebrity endorsements and other makrting angles, I would have to say a lot more marketing hype for me. Not a good first post for me in this forum eh?

My gosh.. I meant ASPECT not EXPECT [nt]

21st Century Horology

 By: Park 88 : September 21st, 2011-00:31
I view Richard Mille watches as an ingenious fusion and perfect marriage of 21st century technology and traditional horology. There is no doubt that Richard has done a great job with marketing of his watches with stars such as Nadal and Massa but i believ...

+1 to your thoughts! [nt]

Dave - welcome! Quite an opening question....!

 By: 219 : September 21st, 2011-09:13
I will go for the true high horology - and here's why. It is safe to say, with one or two exceptions, that before RM came along on the scene, everyone had the 'Patek' model of high horology in mind. Nice thoughts about watchmakers haunched over their desk...

Agreed, Scratch under the hype.

 By: cisco : September 21st, 2011-11:34
Under some ads with some stars, under "xxx xxx€ watch" ads seen in some automobile magazine ( the RM008 some years ago), under event which can look a bit shiny, under "Mr Mille did this and that " in some boutique, under marketing everywhere what do you h...

Thanks for the kind welcome. I am learning a tremendous amount from this site and truly refining my horological knowledge. RM is quickly earning it's way onto my must have list. Keep the great material flowing! Best, Dave.

Reliability

 By: daniel_coste : September 21st, 2011-22:39
And what about reliability ?! Heard many stories about failures !

:)

 By: amhh : September 22nd, 2011-07:26
219 n cisco has given us good answers.. regarding reliability i have no doubts they last.. they just need their regular annual servicing n that should do the job (especially for the manual winding ones)... the brand itself is a unique one with using hi te...

My RM10 did indeed have problems but after one visit to the service centre it was sorted. That was some years ago and I am now slowly saving up my pennies for an 11 to replace the vacuum that was created when the 10 was sold a while back.

I would bet that most of the people that have said " hype" ...

have never had an RM on their wrist. I have been fortunate enough to own or wear pieces that are in most circles considered "high horology" and even the " entry level RM's" stand out as the most memorable. The details of the watches are second to none. Gr...

indeed...

 By: chris4 : September 23rd, 2011-01:17
The watch industry is full of hype and marketing, I suppose any high value low volume top end luxury market always is, you have to investigate & make your own mind up if you are happy to pay for such items for what they are worth to you. Lets face it ...

The secondary prices may give some hints?

 By: KIH : September 24th, 2011-04:13
... marketing - price - high horology.... if the market price is the result of what people think, then the secondary price may offer some hints. [Disclaimer: I do not know or am aware of or am not speaking of any specific model, of the price in the pre-ow...

It depends on which side -and how- of the monocle you want to analyze this : 1. Horology No doubt about technical parti-pris, some components etc. BUT these are not reliable ! I'm always amazed that there are no feedbacks about this. 2. Marketing Pricing ...
