New USC Village

Aug 02, 2018,13:15 PM

The commercial village adjacent to the University of Southern California was completely renovated in August 2017. I happened to be in the neighborhood on Tuesday morning, around noon, so I couldn't help but take a couple of images, especially of the brand new Fire Station 15 which is now located on the intersection of West 30th street and Hoover street, instead of Jefferson Blvd where it was happily operating for decades. This location is the one where my first childhood memories were made, and thus has significant emotional resonance. As a result, I was quite skeptical of how the total renovation would pan-out, and I didn't get a chance to even drive-by since Winter 2015 when it was still under heavy construction. I have to say that my anxiety was quickly alleviated once I spent a half hour walking through the new complex, it complements the old University buildings extremely well, and for anyone who wasn't there to witness what it was like beforehand it would be extremely difficult to tell that anything was done at all! I guess that is the highest compliment I could pay to Mr. Rick Caruso and his construction firm. They have immaculately integrated a tremendous amount of new commercial and academic (?) space, and the University and downtown LA are unquestionably better off for it. These are just the three cell phone shots I could get in the brief time I spent there, in what are the worst lighting conditions, but I plan on returning at some point to make a nice set of images which will show off the environment in significantly better fashion. Thanks for viewing, and drop-by for a visit if you happen to be a local! Cheers, Filip

I always liked to consider myself as a lifelong student . Who knows, if circumstances align I might enroll a PhD program at USC, it was my intent to complete my Masters degree there but it didn't happen because they didn't accept people without 5 years of...

It was, hmmm, 45 years ago. And lived there too, near Felix Chevrolet. But I spent all my time in my office and left to get married without finishing the program. Didn't go to any games, either. Oh well. ...

Unfortunately I've never studied any serious philosophy, and I doubt I'd have the talents to do something original there, but I've always been curious. My own research is in (very) abstract mathematics, and you do find people who've at least tried that di...

I will,

thank you, after enough years spent studying out of primarily practical pursuits I would love the chance to push my thought process of imagination and philosophical curiosity as far as I humanly can . Sadly in my case I was never good at math despite both...

Never too late to go for continued education... My dad took an university extension art (ceramics) class in the 70s and I don't think he attended high school... Looking good and waiting for more photos from inside a classroom ; ) BTW, great story... Casey...

I think it looks great,

and was quite sceptical about it. They actually completed the fire station first in 2015 because it is a standalone building of crucial importance. The Village was completed on August 17, 2017. I don't know about USC but I know UCLA has a plethora of inex...

I shot quite a few images there back in 2012, before the total renovation so it will be highly interesting to see how the before-and-after compare in the end . Cheers, Filip
