Mardi Gras Museum, New Orleans

On our recent visit to New Orleans, we got to tour the Mardi Gras Museum where many of the floats and especially the statuary is stored, waiting to be reused or re-purposed. Most of these statues are paper maché over foam, while some are fiberglass.  Even though Mardi Gras is a joyous event, seeing the statuary out of context made for some macabre photos.

The floats themselves are large and stored in an enormous warehouse.

The flowers are all painted cardboard.

Thanks for looking!

I remember Clint Eastwood did a detective movie that included interior shots of the museum. Your close-up shots do indeed show a different side to the festivities. Only been to NOLA one time and nothing but good memories... it was spring break after all ;...

"Tightrope" 1984 produced by and starring Clint Eastwood...

And it was not all that great!

Beautiful! I love New Orleans, it's truly one of my favorite US cities, which I try to visit regularly (with the excuse of having a collaborator over at Tulane :-)

It must have been really hot now (the latest I ever went there during an academic year was mid April, barely bearable!), but I can still see from your pictures all the charm of the city!

Super series of photos, jporos.

30 years ago or more I visited Rex Kern World, which I believe was on the other side of the river, in Algiers-at least that's my memory. This museum is a definite improvement for the tourist experience. And your close-ups are indeed creepy. You have captu...

Thanks Padj!

It was strange because parades in New Orleans are so much fun. Without the people and the movement, the floats and statues are a completely different experience.
