Focus via the finder or zoomed live view? Handheld?

The rule of thumb for shutter speed is 1/FL or minimum of 1/135 with that lens... any kind of lens / camera stabilization helps, but in general faster for 'better' results... camera shake tends to be exaggerated with the tele lenses and can look like a focus issue.  Higher ISOs will give you faster shutter speeds and the smaller aperture will help with the DOF.

The third photo (first flower photo) seems to be a bit over exposed...

There's a slightly different mind sent with the longer lenses and the subject tends to play to specific FLs...  in addition to working at a longer distance, the compression and OOF create a different look and feel given the same subject... approach the subject based on the FL and vice versa.

One suggestion is to try different situations so as to explore the 'range' of the 135mm.  Side by side testing can also be a useful exercise.

I can't scare these turkeys off. They have been showing up in my yard most every day. This guy, on the other hand, ran off as soon as I tried to get a little closer. These flowers were shot, first at F3.4 and then at F11. The ISO was at either 100 or 200 ...

Thank you, Nico.

Live view always-it's a vision problem (I can't see!) that the LV lets me override. And all the shots were hand-held.
