M.W. has also said that 10 000 hours is not a guarantee that you will become successful. You can spend 10 000 hours on something and still not be victorious. However, one thing is for sure if you want to accomplish something great you need to spend at least this focused time on whatever your field is.

Down the Rabbit Hole...

 By: cshimokita : December 8th, 2022-01:24
In 2008 Malcolm Gladwell published " Outliers: The Story of Success " where he presents his take on the requirements for success in any field. Gladwell is also the author of " The Tipping Point ", " David and Goliath ", and " What the Dog Saw ". In " Outl...

I think....

in a largely subjective art form like photography, the individual perspective is far more relevant and lasting than what any one group of people may feel or think at any point in time. My preferences, at this middle aged point in life, are as fully formed...

Thanks for your thoughts...

[nt]

I have read 10,000 hours about watches

 By: TeutonicCarFan : December 8th, 2022-02:24
But I feel like I don't know a thing 🤣

Hahaha

It reminds me of a famous philosopher's (I believe Henry David Thoreau) quote where he said that he doesn't remember the vast majority of the books he's read in life, yet they still made him who he is/was........

Having just cataloged about 300+ books that have made me who I am

 By: cazalea : December 8th, 2022-15:43
I wish I could read them again, this time more carefully. But I fear I don't have enough brain cells left to re-digest. Something I read this morning: We only understand life backwards but we must live forwards

I am reminded of the axiom...

If one believes they have no future, they are forced to live in the past. Congrats on cataloguing that portfolio.... Casey .

I am guessing you know enough to be dangerous 😉😉😉, Casey .

You mean costly! 🤣😁

Hehehe! Good one!

I had 7 years of bodybuilding

 By: Cookies : December 8th, 2022-04:21
The muscles never disappear fully, and quickly regrow even on light training. Had my whole life living/working with women. I still cannot understand them.

Seven years is a good amount of time...

 By: cshimokita : December 8th, 2022-13:03
and a good analogy... as to your second point, good luck 😉,

Who does!

99% of them don't understand themselves....

+1 ... there's an oft quoted axiom that "practice makes perfect..."

 By: cshimokita : December 8th, 2022-12:58
it's not true. All practice does is make you more proficient... you've articulated one of Gladwell's ("Outliers...") key factors... all "successful" individuals practice long, hard, and much more than their contemporaries. Casey .

Unfortunately....

Unlike my employer, I'm pretty confident I'm not gonna be inventing a public transportation app anytime soon, I'm simply not genetically configured for that type of stuff ........

Tough one, success..

I was in a conversation with a mutual friend this morning. Something that he said resonated with me. He said, “Enjoy the process, not the accumulation.” It was said in the context of work and wealth and the endless pursuit of “more”. Probably applies to p...

The concept of "success" is indeed a slippery weasel...

 By: cshimokita : December 8th, 2022-21:53
I am guessing who that mutual friend might be, but if it's who I think it is, nothing could be truer in my perception of the gentleman and his approach to life... Casey .

👍

I find "success" to be a rather contrived term...

 By: Blansky : December 8th, 2022-17:36
You can be a financial success by buying the right stocks in a few years. Basically, just luck. Being an artistic success, you can be "discovered" and the hot new thing and be a success in a short time as well. I think the goal is to be a CONSISTENT succe...

One of my reasons for going down that rabbit hole...

 By: cshimokita : December 8th, 2022-22:23
was to articulate and possibly start a conversation about part of a process that involves [as you have mentioned] consistency with one's own photography. Using 10,000 hours as mentioned by Gladwell, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Cherie Hiser and others as one "e...

That's a good point. Gladwell should've interviewed you!

 By: Ruffian : December 9th, 2022-07:19
I don't think he made that point in his book.

Good point Ruffian...

 By: cshimokita : December 9th, 2022-08:16
I assume you are referring to Blansky's comments about "artistic success" and/or "to be a consistent success". The 2008 book was number one on the " The New York Times " bestseller list for eleven consecutive weeks and was generally well received by criti...

Sorry for the confusion. Yes, I was referring to Blansky's comment about consistency.

 By: Ruffian : December 10th, 2022-01:47
I got out my copy (from 2009 I think) of Outliers last night and started re-reading it. It's still got great hooks that draw the reader in. I'm only at chapter 2 or 3 (the one with the Beatles), but I think he did not talk about being good consistently II...

You've touched on many themes.

 By: Uncle Chico : December 8th, 2022-18:53
On photography, we take photos of objects that have meaning for us, but photographic art captures objects that have meaning for others. On success, we are fundamentally biological entities and the measure of success is a long life. On happiness, someone o...

I like that bit: "photographic art captures objects that have meaning for others"

It's always been a puzzle when I run across someone who has made up their mind what they want to be... maybe that's one reason I enjoyed the move trailer of "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty", not to mention the music of José González - "Stay Alive" Casey ...

Well said!
