Patek Philippe

Some watches just retain their magic. Born magic. And stayed magic. The 5070P. The symmetry of the sub-dials. The stepped case. Also, for me, the quintessential combination of platinum case and blue dial. Produced for just one year. Ahhhhhthe 5070P. Did I...  

But the movement is too small, mwaaahhh.

But on my wrist I only see the dial.

magic indeed , there are just a couple of iconic watch and the 5070 definetly one of those.

I wish this watch were 2 mm smaller (or my wrist 2 mm wider) so that I too could wear this most wonderful of all flawed watches!

.....there is basically no other watch within the history of Patek Philippe that looks like the 5070. For that reason, it stands out as sonething special to me. Thanks FabR

Now that 5170P will run out this year, a new manually wound chrono is due to be introduced. This is going to be interesting. Hope PP will come up with something great. Best, V.

I think the thing is, Patek will always be bringing out something new and exciting. Each year, as one model retires and the next hot model evolves, the wheel turns and the process starts over. I remember very well when the 5070 was first introduced. Then ... 

The 5170p ended. It would make some sense to introduce a new Chrono

I am curious: why was the 5170 a disappointment to the collector community? Too bland in appearance? Movement too unremarkable for a high-end chrono? Both of the above? I ask as someone who’s contemplating a purchase of one of these.

the whole range classic watch designs are very mild in demand ,the only way to keep those interesting and maintain their price to make relatively short production runs.

It’s an interesting point. The 5170 is more “dressy” than the 5070. The 5230 is more dressy than the 5130. I wonder if it’s the formal spectrum that is affecting demand? The easier a watch is to wear with jeans, the more demand?

Would be no prob to wear a 3970 with jeans(wish i have one ,i mean the watch however some ppl just can t cross their mind barriers and stick to the etiquette,dress watch w formal wear,sports watch with casuals so i agree with you might be that cause the l... 

Dressy..... classic..... formal..... we can define the word in many different ways, but we are both trying to catch the same theme. I think you are on to something

I have a 5230 and a 5170, both referred to as more “formal” than their predecessors, but I don’t have any problem wearing them casually. I actually prefer them in that type of attire, but I confess I’ve always gone a little against the grain of traditiona...
