As others indicated, it is to distinguish the evening/night hours. It was that way on the original first series from '85-'87, along with other distinguishing marks, such as the accent on the 2nd "E" in geneve, bubbles that flanked swiss at the 6:00 position, etc.

Dear all, This is a "brand new" 3940G. You will notice that the lower half of the 24 hour dial is "yellowish". It is not a photo defect or "funny" angle. Is there anything "wrong" and in your opinion 1) is it rectifiable and 2) how does this "defect" affe...

sorry, what exactly do you mean by "night indicator"? They way I "see" the time is 1540

At that time (15:40), its hand is being overlapped by the day hand.
