Patek Philippe

So, what goes on at Patek?

I think there are several things that contribute to the problems some folks are having.  It is disturbing to read, not only issues of this sort, but the number of problems folks are encountering. Because of my loyalty to the brand, I don't want to believe that PP would make watches just to get them out there for the sake of money, but it seems that  may be the case.

Twenty-five years ago, production levels were 8-10,000 pieces per year, 2008 saw 40,000 pieces produced.  I don't know the exact numbers but I think it would be safe to estimate that within the past ten years PP has produced some 350,000-400,000 pieces.  I believe the total production from 1839-1989 had not reached the 1,000,000 piece mark.  I can't help but think these production numbers have contributed to many of the problems folks are encountering with the newer pieces.  Maybe there is something about the way watches were made 30+ years ago  which makes the pieces more desirable and bring these incredibly high prices... the philosophy where it is built until it is right.

Evidently, the learning curve for Patek's increased production is something they are having a tough time getting under control.

Reliability,  performance, attention to detail, certainly the perception of value (with respect to record setting auction prices) etc. are some of the factors which brought PP to the apex, not the marketing of being a family owned business.  It would seem that it would be prudent for the family to stay in the office and get these issues solved before things really get out of hand.  As quickly as Patek's popularity came, it can go.
