I would say that because we all have different tastes and budgets we are not at all competitors. Thank god for that.
For example I strong disagree that Patek is the ultimate trophy. Yes its a great brand and well managed but there were great
watch brands long before Patek even existed (for disclosure purposes I also own two Pateks) but only because
as a watch collector you cannot get around not owning any. Its much like in cars, although I am not a big fan of Ferrari
you cannot get around to owning one if you like cars and car racing history (maybe this was not the best of my analogies).

You are probably at the nut end of the spectrum.

I feel you can be a 'serious' collector without having 'serious' funds. In fact it makes it more important to be serious about collecting when you have limited means. I would class myself as a collector rather than an enthusiast of Patek. I love their pie...
