I'm sorry for you! It must a very breath taking instant to live!
In fact it is not surprising that a sapphire crystal breaks so easily. It is supposedly unscratchable (unless you try with a diamond or something else very strongly) to some extent, but in no way unbreakable. To avoid breaking a plexiglass is much much better. It scratches easily, but hardly brakes!
That's why the Omega Speedmaster Pro for long remained faithful to the plexiglass!
