When Blümlein defined the DNA of ALS (back in the 90s) he did a great job and part of his (first) approach was the "extra weight" of the cases, the buckles and the folding clasps. They feel quite often superior, because of their extra weight. Even "blind" people can feel why it is something special and why it is expensive. It was one of those details that helped ALS to get their position of today. The cases from PP (and other classical/traditional Swiss brands) are not that heavy in general, but even without knowing the exact numbers I have the impressions that changed recently - especially in the case of PP. There is just more "meat", when I look at their new cases and not only because of the bigger sizes. On the other side I had the impression that some of the new cases from ALS show the same style than before, but with "less meat" and closer to some cases from JLC. Good or bad? It´s up to you!

The finishing has a different approach/style as well and it is a matter of taste, more than it is about different quality.

I can´t proof this with numbers, but at least these are my observations/impressions.

should be available since today and maybe you can see one at your AD, some time soon. Such a special piece is not for everybody, but when I saw it in the metal I was more tempted than I expected it to be. I almost forgot the diamonds with all those gorgeo...

and when it comes to Patek they are (sometimes, to be very honest) able to deliver some gorgeous pieces even with bling. A gentleman and senior Patek collector told me once that he is really keen on the Ref. 5074. He would take it in each metal. Even the ...

I am a very strong advocate for diamonds on a time peace, especially on a Patek. That lovely 5298 p would be also my choice and this one that you are showing: a stunner! Best Moritz

how would you compare the case work between this (diamonds aside) and a Datograph, for example? I expect a high level of perfect but with some subtle differences... Cheers, Magnus
