I love your 2551. The construction of the movement is superb and the watch is supremely elegant. It is not for me, but nonetheless I love it from a distance. Not wishing to provoke, I also love my Nautilus.
All has been said already, but my answer to your question -from the point of view of someone who resolutely does not find any pleasure on collecting but passionately enjoys fine (and also not so fine) watches- one of the main reasons people spend 10x in contemporary watches is insufficient knowledge.
Hopefully, as we normal enthusiasts become more knowledgeable, more people will feel confident to delve in the minefield of purchasing vintage watches. At any rate, there seems to be a trend in this direction.
Not that my opinion matters, but thank you for your thought-provoking post.
