To my knowledge, it has to do with how high the hands are mounted from the movement, the length of the cannon pinion.
For example, in a watch with complications, the cannon pinion may be longer. Or if the watch has applied markers on the dial instead of printed markers, it may be necessary with a longer cannon pinion.

Hello folks, quick quizz for you. The certificate for my Calatrava shows the Calibre as:- 215 PS AIG.2 I have seen AIG.3 as well. Can you shed light on what the AIG. 'x' represent? Thanks for letting me pick your brains... Gary
