3940 is the start of the reference and
J means yellow gold
R rose gold
G white gold
P platinum
Second series refers to the dial variations. I think the 2nd series was between 1987 and 1989. With the 2nd series dials there were no lines between numbers in the leap year indicator at 3 o'clock.
