interesting in watches (very long time ago, sadly) "internet" didn't even exist, we had the 14.400 baud modems and the "virtual community" was a sort of underground enclave in those were called "bbs".
Even less existed any sort of "watch enthusiast community" and the only info you could gather were those published in very modest magazines.
Poor infos, not precise at all, neither well documented. A lack of information you could only try to compensate with great efforts (and passion) and talking with great and expert collectors, watchmakers, and other people of the field.

Nowadays everything has changed and who want to learn something more about a watch (or any other thing) has just to handle a mouse or a finger of his hand and reach one of the many thematic fora existing on the web.

So, of course, we can discuss about everything we like...why not?...but we can't reduce everything to a matter of tastes or personal "feelings" if we want also give some sort of information to everybody reading with that purpose.
When I read a thematic forum to go in deep about something I'm interested to I expect to find informations and other details can help me in my decisions, which usually are not the tastes of other guys (i've already my own), so when I write on the same forum I try to give exactly that kind of informations I would expect reading smile

Loving the chalk white dial...

 By: Jester : March 24th, 2015-19:31
This is just another classic example of not much love at first sight but somehow the affection just grow stronger over time. I've even learned to look past the highly polished finish which is typically not of my preference! (Gotta admit it's a bit of a ha...

You feel harder...

 By: ciaca : March 24th, 2015-20:21
Because there is a huge difference between the movements of the two watches. The Lemania 2320 housed in the ref. 5070 is one of the most beautiful manual chronographs with traditional "side action" (please excuse my terrible english technical vocabulary),...

Granted

 By: Jester : March 24th, 2015-21:42
I should not expect same finesse on the pushers between 5070 and 5960 but somehow I still expect 'lesser' difference between the two, maybe I'm just being overly optimistic. :-) Moreover, I also agree that as a sport watch on bracelet, some of the design ...

In a watch with that price but i'm already aware it's really optimistic to expect in every occasion some sort of excellence from these companies and patek in particular :-) One of the first things i check when i buy a chronograph is the architecture of th...

Well, I guess you get

 By: Jester : March 25th, 2015-08:42
ROUGHLY what you paid for? :-)

i'm not so sure :-)

 By: ciaca : March 25th, 2015-08:47
The world is plenty of watches better made, better performing and less costing :-) Roughly, as usual when you buy a so famous brand, you pay a lot more just for the brand itself and not what you "get". Regards

Well, if we start

 By: Jester : March 25th, 2015-09:50
comparing price across different models from different brands, these could easily lead into endless debate. It's difficult to quantify the brand value hence in my earlier post I was comparing prices among different Patek models, which I came to the conclu...

But still remaining into the PP range with a look to the vintage or no more produced models you will find better value for money. If you compare the price of this 5960 with the current value of a good 3940j or 3970j, for instance Of course everything is r...

Ok now

 By: Jester : March 25th, 2015-10:59
you're comparing the list price of a brand new 5960 to the market price of a used 3940? Again, I'm not sure it's a fair comparison. Nevertheless, you seem to of the opinion that modern Patek are no good value so perhaps we should simply leave it at that. ...

i don't know...

 By: ciaca : March 25th, 2015-11:27
if is a "fair" comparison, what I know is there is much more "value" in a good never worn or well maintained 3970 than in a 5960 (if you like the smoothness of the pushers, as you stated before, just for instance). "Luxury" doesn't explain everything, as ...

Value for money is far from being the only choice criteria

By: Mark in Paris : March 25th, 2015-10:59
Buying a good "value for money" watch is not synonymous of "exciting". The brand and many other subjective aspects may worth much more. Cheers, Mark

personal choice criteria, which are subjective and not debatable at all. Value for money is not the only one, bit is one of the few we can discuss. Otherwise we should limit ourselves to a declaration of what we like and what don't. Which, I guess, is far...

discussing about quantifiable elements is something helpful to compare them and is part of the decision process. I agree with you and it is part of my reflexion too. But I was just emphasizing the fact judging a watch is not relying on facts only By the w...

I will come back to that one, as I was quite silent since its introduction.

 By: amanico : March 24th, 2015-21:34
I had mixed feelings on that one, I must say...The polished case is one thing, the dial gave me some strong mixed feelings, and the bracelet is a total no go for me. I would have still preferred a polished / brushed case, or an all brushed case, the brace...

Actually

 By: Jester : March 24th, 2015-21:45
I wasn't attracted to 5960 on the PT/RG model w/ dark grey/blue/brown dial but this chalk white dial really captured my attention. It's funny how a simple change of colour scheme would change my view on a watch significantly.

I agree that there is something very cool, fresh and original with that dial.

 By: amanico : March 24th, 2015-21:52
But this Damn Bracelet is a big issue for me... Best, Jester. Nicolas

I actually asked about the possibility of

 By: Jester : March 24th, 2015-21:55
retrofitting a leather/alligator strap onto the watch when I bought it but the dealer told me that it's impossible. Haven't really looked into it yet but I'll let you know IF I found a way to get away with that 'shiny' bracelet. :-)

That is what surprises me the most; the fact that it is impossible.

 By: amanico : March 24th, 2015-22:09
Impossible to buy it without the bracelet, ok, but impossible to remove it and to put a leather strap on it??? Best, Nicolas

All these discussions sparked my curiosity

 By: Jester : March 24th, 2015-23:33
so I took a good look again! As you can see here, the push-in bar is not fitted to the actual 'end' piece but rather one link away. As such, I suspect that once you take out the bracelet, you'll still have the end link attached to the case. So one would h...

I haven't tried

 By: Jester : March 24th, 2015-23:38
as it doesn't look obvious how I can do it. The push-in bar will simply take the bracelet away from the second link on... More importantly, I don't have any strap to replace it with so no real motivation for me to take it apart! :-)

Hmmm not sure how I can do that

 By: Jester : March 24th, 2015-23:48
with the two protruding interlinks...

Not sure...

By: Mark in Paris : March 25th, 2015-03:14
... the 2 little links touching the case remain. How would they be attached to the case? I think that when you take of the steam, the whole part goes away (together with the part touching the case) I'll be curious to know

The push pins...

 By: ciaca : March 25th, 2015-13:48
Are connected to the last link before the end link, but the end link is of course linked to that and not to the case, and comes away with the remaining part of the bracelet. Regards

Do you mean a 5960/1A actually fitted w/ strap? (i.e. white dial 5960 on strap) Would love it if you can share a picture of it as my dealer told me it's impossible!!! Now to your questions: -The polished bracelet did bother me at first. It's just a bit to...

Now you're really getting me excited. The lug width is 21mm so I can already think of a few straps for it..

21mm straps

 By: keks : March 25th, 2015-00:34
what would you imagine putting on? I find 21mm a bit tricky to find, have ordered from Camille Fournet a few times in the past but always looking for new place to buy from. Here is my gray croc strap on 5960P: ...

I looks really nice that way

Imagine a dark grey or even a creme strap for summer... THanks for the pics Keks :)

I would love to see it on a strap that can be get wet

 By: keks : March 25th, 2015-13:11
The only place I have ordered straps from is Camille Fournet and as far as I know they do not make custom synthetic straps. Not aware of other manufacturers who make 21/16mm synthetics that would fit

Can you try to get information on Shark material for instance

By: Mark in Paris : March 25th, 2015-14:10
maybe this kind of material can resist to water? Otherwise, aside for Camille F, there is: - Atelier Jean Rousseau, 9 rue Duphot 75001 Paris - 01 47 03 05 32 - or ABP (more expensive) 28 place du marché st-honoré 75001 paris 01 42 86 13 70 Maybe they have...

A very nice dial which was hard to create imho

By: Mark in Paris : March 25th, 2015-03:09

It does look like fitting a leather/alligator strap onto the watch is possible so I'm toying w/ different options now. Moreover, an brushed/polished interlaced bracelet would have been VERY interesting. Maybe that's another option I can toy with! :-)
