The best looking 5170 of the lot even though I am normal partial to rose gold Best wishes, Sham

It is a very handsome dial.

Enjoy your watch. Its a joy to own. Much pleasure to wear. Cheers.

When I first looked at this one, I did not like it much.

 By: zabreg1 Mr White : October 11th, 2016-07:57
It was a bit... bare compared to the 5070. Then, as time goes by and I keep seeing it, I think I may have made a big mistake. It is so elegant and simple. Granted, I prefer the black dial, but the white is by far the most elegant and, IMO, will hold up be...

All is not lost!

If you are really keen on the 5170G, I have seen quite a few for sale at Patek ADs in London which is becoming an increasingly attractive place this week to buy a Patek. Sorry for the sales pitch! Best wishes, Sham

I know, my local AD has it.

But I have somehow moved on. The 5170 is now in the 'the one that got away' category. But, I have other plans...

Sorry, I have no idea these days.

 By: zabreg1 Mr White : October 11th, 2016-09:52
I know a new 5170g will run around $50-60 k now, but no idea on the prices of 5070.

me neither.....

 By: Baron - Mr Red : October 11th, 2016-11:15
....but if it was a straight swap on price, the 5070 rules for me. Both nice though.

To me, the 5070 is more 'solid' whereas the 5170 is more 'refined'.

 By: zabreg1 Mr White : October 11th, 2016-11:19
They both have their strenghts, I just don\'t know.

i would add.....

 By: Baron - Mr Red : October 12th, 2016-01:05
5070 is a Patek icon......5170 is not.

+1. [nt]

 By: amanico : October 12th, 2016-01:09

Agreed.

 By: zabreg1 Mr White : October 12th, 2016-02:36
But I would add \'maybe some day\'.

Excuse my ignorance please

 By: sham1 : October 12th, 2016-05:05
but could you explain to me why is the 5070 an icon as compared to a 5170 especially as the 5170 has a Patek movement? I have read here on how iconic the 5070 is but perhaps I am missing the point because looking at both watches, the 5170 looks better to ...

The question of which you prefer is ibviously subjective and unique to each person.

 By: zabreg1 Mr White : October 12th, 2016-06:06
Being an \'icon\', I would say if pressed, is something people covet and see as a true representation of what the manufacture is and/or stands for, and also of the sheer demand. I believe in the case of 5070 / 5170 it is a question of time. The 5070 is no...

just because something is an icon doesn't mean that you have to like it....

 By: Baron - Mr Red : October 12th, 2016-06:35
I think there are many reasons that the 5070 is an icon. If you read the history of the watch and how collectors over the years have come to view it, you will see it is a watch that is very highly coveted. I was at a Patek factory visit last year and even...

Thank you

 By: sham1 : October 12th, 2016-07:02
for clarifying why the 5070 is considered iconic but I am hoping that a watch does not become iconic only because it is produced in limited numbers but because of something special about it be the its movement, dial or its association to a previous model ...

sure.....

 By: Baron - Mr Red : October 12th, 2016-07:18
from my perspective, the 5970 would be my choice between those two.....doesn't make me right and you wrong...just a difference in our respective personal tastes..... Rarity in itself is irrelevant......supply relative to demand, however, is a determinant ...

on the wrist....a killer.

 By: Baron - Mr Red : October 12th, 2016-07:30
...

the 5070's mystique is tied to rarity

 By: murcielagoboy : October 12th, 2016-09:16
Although it's a beautiful piece, the fact is, collectors want rarity above all - after all, that's the number one way of retaining value - and I'll stick my neck out here, if the 5170 was produced in the same numbers of the 5070, you'd have the same hyste...

my paintings are far rarer than Picasso's......i only painted three paintings.....

 By: Baron - Mr Red : October 12th, 2016-09:42
Picasso...on the other hand....was prolific. ......yet, Picasso's iconicism (and my lack of artistic status) is not in doubt. It isn't "just" rarity.

Haha. Good point.

 By: zabreg1 Mr White : October 12th, 2016-14:52
But, as I read the comments, one thing that is common is that there is not just 1 single thing that makes a watch iconic. It is a combination of factors, and even then, not everyone will hold that opinion.

Well put Zabreg [nt]

Agreed

 By: sham1 : October 12th, 2016-15:25
But it does help if it is a Patek or Ferrari rarity!

Looks nice

 By: sham1 : October 12th, 2016-15:26
and suits your wrist.

So marvellous

By: Mark in Paris : October 13th, 2016-10:17
and this shot precisely puts aside the color that we can't see here. Hence, we can focus on the other elements: the numerals' thickness and style, the way the dial is build etc... The more I see it.... erf.

You have to ask! This is what is nice about sharing our passion

By: Mark in Paris : October 13th, 2016-10:13
Here are 2 posts I made in the past about the 5070 (and 5170). www.watchprosite.com www.watchprosite.com As Baron said, no real definition but the success a watch has encountered over time is certainly one of the few hints helping making a...

I think we are many to have had the same feeling at the beginning

By: Mark in Paris : October 13th, 2016-10:04
and this is certainly due to the thinner, more refined and classical case of the 5170: less visible. It is there to support the dial. In the 5070 I would say it is a significant part of hte watch, working together with the dial (and the beautiful bezel!)....

Very well put.

 By: zabreg1 Mr White : October 13th, 2016-10:12
This is exactly what I meant.

Agree, great looking watch! [nt]

Just if this version would have

the hands of the black 5170G, it would be perfect. Best, Kari

so true! [nt]

 By: dom007 : October 11th, 2016-09:59

That's my favorite 5170's dial

By: Mark in Paris : October 13th, 2016-10:01
The charm, the style I prefer and the scales... The balance between Breguet numerals and the decoration of the dial are gorgeous and very discreet. It is a classical Chronograph at its best IMHO. Beautiful shot by the way Enjoy it! Cheers, Mark

Thanks guys for your kind remarks I am sure the debate between the 5070 and 5170 will live long, however I am more than happy with this classic looking very wearable and discreet time piece Thanks for looking have a great weekend

Wonderful timepiece!

The white dial and white gold are indeed understated. This watch flies under the radar when viewed from afar. When one gets a good look at it, it hits you that this is a special piece. That is what I love about many of the Patek watches; They are understa...
