I’d say that’s a possible later service dial on the 3940. It could be very last of the series so some variations. The different thicker font (later San serif font on checking no 5 and J for example) for the date is a typical tell tale sign. I would pass o... 

The asking for the 3940 has really shot up but whether a lot of these are actually moving is another thing. Many are over polished watch only pieces not collectors set by any stretch. The desirable ones are first series or second series unpolished conditi... 

It’s very hard to find a good example on an early series that’s complete for less than 80-90k USD these days. Whether they are moving is a different story.

Ive been trying to find a moderately worn 3940 3 series for a while in gold and haven’t even seen a good one pop up. One was in NY with some major issues with the dial, and another is in Europe but has a swapped dial…

Thanks, how would you check the dial? I checked on forums and I think that for being a 2005 3rd series, it has all the required features (San serif,Swiss aligned)

A typical problem with many 3940 subdials. Those without the problem have a higher value - and will most likely be more desirable in the future as well.

I’m personally keeping an eye out for a nice 5140 such as 5140p blue dial as these are looking like bargains compared to the asking for some 3940!
