My best watch ever!

 By: sham1 : October 16th, 2023-15:07
I am actually very much sober while making this sweeping statement. This is despite having owned a Roger Smith Series 1, a Gronefeld Remontoire and a Daniel Roth tourbillon. So what makes me place the Patek Philippe 3878J above all else in such illustriou...

Wow, congratulations !

 By: Cpt Scarlet : October 16th, 2023-15:16
I absolutely love the quality of this watch and remember seeing one several years ago. Enjoy !

Thank you very much!

 By: sham1 : October 16th, 2023-15:57
The watch arguably will not be for everyone but for me, it is perfect!

The quality will endure …

 By: Cpt Scarlet : October 16th, 2023-18:20
Long after trends have come and gone.

I am glad you think so too!

 By: sham1 : October 16th, 2023-18:31
Thank you

Most important .. happy birthday!! Almost as important ... fantastic watch!!

 By: patekova : October 16th, 2023-17:38
Rarely seen, this watch is a very serious work of horological art! Who cares if the time is exact or not!? Must be great to just enjoy the artistry on your wrist! A double congratulations !!! P S I like the company you keep !

Thank you so much!

 By: sham1 : October 16th, 2023-18:30
It means a lot coming from you, an authority on all things Patek! And thank you too for the birthday wishes. I believe that although the rare handicrafts remain fairly niche, they are somewhat under appreciated compared to say the sports models which is a...

Modesty is an admirable trait

 By: sham1 : October 17th, 2023-00:48
I have been reading your posts for a decade now so l bow in respect, and I seldom bow! )

I do it only on special occasions! :-)

 By: sham1 : October 17th, 2023-01:16
I am a 60 year old in denial and I still play squash four times a week so fingers crossed my back will survive

Thank you!

 By: sham1 : October 17th, 2023-00:39
It sure is a classic even if it is a little niche.

Wow, I mean big wow!

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : October 16th, 2023-18:52
When did you start posting sober? πŸ˜…

And amazing watch, such delicate work.

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : October 16th, 2023-18:54
Could you speak to the RWS series 1? I'd love to hear more of your experience of it.

Thank you! :-)

 By: sham1 : October 17th, 2023-00:44
The Smith is beautifully made with a sublime dial but its 13.5mm height makes it too thick for a three handed dress watch in my opinion. It does keep amazingly accurate time, not a consideration to some but at that price, one looks at everything!

Totally!! :-)

 By: sham1 : October 17th, 2023-01:13
No disrespect meant to the Smith but as a lover of smaller and slimmer watches, the Patek ticks all the boxes for me and at this price, all the boxes must be ticked!

That's easy

 By: sham1 : October 17th, 2023-03:15
The movement as you know is to die for and the watch despite being 39.5mm wears very well even on my small wrist. However, I know of two collectors who have had problems with their Remontoires so I have since focused only on time only watches. Fewer compl...

This is a wise take.

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : October 17th, 2023-03:24
I mean, I'd like a minute repeater someday, but yes, more complications=more things to go wrong.

I always thought

 By: sham1 : October 17th, 2023-03:27
that a minute repeater would be my grail but I would find it uncomfortable somehow to place such a valuable timepiece on my wrist when I know that money could help so many people.

Yes, watches are for after helping others*.

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : October 17th, 2023-03:29
You are so right. *others includes people and also cats and other animals in my book!

Theoretically of course

 By: sham1 : October 17th, 2023-03:32
I should get rid of all my watches and put the money into a foundation to help others but I am admittedly not as good as some are and still enjoy life's pleasures. I guess it is striking the right balance between spoiling oneself and helping others.

The foundation can be in your will, there are many ways to be a good person!

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : October 17th, 2023-03:35
It's okay to have a balance. We needn't all end up penniless like Saladin, as admirable as his example is. With modern estate planning, he might have had other options!

That is the plan my friend!

 By: sham1 : October 17th, 2023-03:43
And actually it will be a foundation for cats!!

I may contribute!

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : October 17th, 2023-03:44

I have a soft spot for our feline freinds

 By: sham1 : October 17th, 2023-03:47
and feed the strays in Kuala Lumpur every night . Unfortunately this has also made me a marked man as there is a fraternity that do not subscribe to that.

Yikes

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : October 17th, 2023-11:24
Keep up the good work, stay safe

That's the plan! Thank you!

 By: sham1 : October 17th, 2023-15:07
Thank goodness guns are illegal in Malaysia

Water has been my best friend for years! :-)

 By: sham1 : October 17th, 2023-00:41
Sixty to be precise!!

Great!

 By: sham1 : October 17th, 2023-01:14
I would not be able to afford watches otherwise!

Escorts ply you for business??!!

 By: sham1 : October 17th, 2023-03:12
)I am most envious as I am the invisible man to them as they know I only pay for watches and cars!

Have you tried quietly crying?

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : October 17th, 2023-03:17

I am a howler!

 By: sham1 : October 17th, 2023-03:18
I never cry quietly

Ah, well, it's ended up quite well.

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : October 17th, 2023-03:22
A wedding ring and an extraordinary Patek (plus cars)!

You remember well!

 By: sham1 : October 17th, 2023-03:24
I am too old to rob banks so I am blessed and happy with what I have (especially the wife!)

The greatest blessing!

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : October 17th, 2023-03:29

Especially for me

 By: sham1 : October 17th, 2023-03:33
as I have had four failed attempts and I believe there are a few out there taking bets!!

Absolutely!

 By: sham1 : October 17th, 2023-03:46
I have learned something new actually - sometimes even if you don't appear to have that much in common with your partner, you could gel very well if your characteristics complete each other. Wait! Wat! I almost forgot that this is a watch forum!

I appreciate it!

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : October 17th, 2023-11:19

I am sure you are an expert in such matters :-)

 By: sham1 : October 17th, 2023-15:06
and do not need any advice from me.

Congratulations

 By: gcsk76 : October 16th, 2023-19:28
And happy birthday to you Sham.

Thank you my friend!

 By: sham1 : October 17th, 2023-00:51
Hope you are keeping well! You are probably the only other person from this forum who buys from the same AD as l do!

Congratulations on this very meaningful acquisition

 By: Derreck : October 16th, 2023-20:03
Hope it brings you happiness for many years to come, and happy belated birthday

Many thanks for your wishes!

 By: sham1 : October 17th, 2023-00:53
I must confess that I do not keep all the watches that I buy but I have high hopes that this will always remain in my collection.

Happy birthday and happy new watch!

 By: andrea~ : October 16th, 2023-20:55
The movement is absolutely stunning. Wow.

Thank you Andrea!

 By: sham1 : October 17th, 2023-00:55
The movement is so stunning that l am glad l can see it at a glance!

Lovely watch Definitely worth waiting for

 By: watch-guy.com : October 16th, 2023-21:32
Firstly happy birthday Secondly big congrats on acquiring this piece I saw it about 10 years ago but it was way out of my budget You are very lucky to have such a kind and accommodating AD Firstly to hold onto it whilst you pay it off and secondly to send...

Agreed on all counts!

 By: sham1 : October 17th, 2023-01:02
I was therefore most disappointed to find out a few months ago that my AD has lost its Patek dealership. I believe Patek has been trying to reduce the number of outlets selling its watches to assist in distribution and availability so my AD which had six ...

Happy Birthday and congrats!

 By: JustaGuy : October 16th, 2023-22:24
What an amazing watch! I can't imagine what patience it took to wait 5 years! Must feel incredible to have it on your wrist!

Absolutely!

 By: sham1 : October 17th, 2023-01:06
Waiting for a watch makes the actual ownership of it even more pleasurable in my opinion. I had waited almost 6 years for the RW Smith and by the time my Frodsham arrives in 2027, it too would have been a 6 year wait!

Lucky fellow, I hope the waitlist comes down just a little!

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : October 17th, 2023-02:59
Or I will have a decade for my second Frodsham!

How is your Frodsham doing by the way?

 By: sham1 : October 17th, 2023-03:17
Does it keep good time? Any issues with it?!

It was on my wrist today, as most days! It's like a time-keeping talisman for me.

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : October 17th, 2023-03:19
Should anything amiss happen, touch wood, Richard Stenning would take care of it. So, I have a bit of peace of mind.

That man is a star!

 By: sham1 : October 17th, 2023-03:23
I just emailed him last night warning him of a fourth potential customer I have recommended to him. I am so pleased to hear that your watch is rock solid. That by the way will be my exit watch - simply because there will be zero money left after that - I ...

He is half the value of a Frodsham.

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : October 17th, 2023-03:26
Okay, maybe a third, the watch is very, very nice.

A third on their recently increased prices

 By: sham1 : October 17th, 2023-03:28
equates to a half when you bought the watch!!

That might be so!

 By: Spangles - Dr. Tabby : October 17th, 2023-03:32
At least the price increases are based on a reasonable adjustment for costs of labor, etc.

As I told Richard

 By: sham1 : October 17th, 2023-03:35
his watches still represent good value especially if one compares them to the Voutilainen, Smith and Dufours which I do.

Just noticed something making your watch even more special. Self-winding versions of the vintage Patek skeleton watches are

 By: patekova : October 17th, 2023-00:41
at an even higher level of desirability, featuring the famous Cal 240 SQU movement with the beautifully engraved rotor, to go along with the engraving on the side of the case. This is a very serious watch! Bravo!

Well spotted!

 By: sham1 : October 17th, 2023-01:11
And thank goodness it is self winding too because the crown is not the largest around and I would have not liked to have had to wind this watch daily as I tend to wind all my watches daily (all six of them!). This one will stay on a glass winder when it i...

Here you go!

 By: sham1 : October 17th, 2023-15:02
The Patek Phillipe 7200R London Edition limited to 80 pieces The Kikuchi Nakagawa Murakumo. Only 8 are made annually resulting in a 10 years wait list The Vacheron Constantin 1921 American The Bovet, my largest watch at 39mm but it wears well due to the l...

Congrats my friend. You finally got it.

 By: Watchonthewrists : October 17th, 2023-09:43
I remember you were talking about it a few years ago when we met. Its definitely a watch that got your name on it πŸ‘ŠπŸ»πŸ‘ŒπŸ»πŸ€— Wear it in best of health

Thank you my friend!

 By: sham1 : October 17th, 2023-15:04
I hope you have been keeping well. The watch was well worth the wait. It does not look like a watch to be worn daily but I intend to wear it often!

Sounds like a wonderful GTG Sham ! Please remind me whom you

 By: GLau : October 17th, 2023-16:14
met ? I drank too much champagne to guess your GTG buddy !

You should have stuck to water Gordon like I did! :-)

 By: sham1 : October 17th, 2023-16:18
Thank you for the company last night. It was a good chin wag!
