All, I’m pleasantly surprised

that you responded to most post. FabR, I am particularly surprised that you remembered that I am awaiting a 5236 from my AD. Thank you all (y’all) for your thoughts. The more I think about it, the more I am inclined to go for the 3940 without even trying on the 5236; nevertheless, I’ll wait and see.

36mm PC Revisited

 By: hhwatchman : August 28th, 2021-15:19
Will Patek ever go back to a 36mm Perpetual Calendar? I hope so. I had to let go of this 5040R a few years ago; it fit my wrist quite well, and I am back in the market for a new piece. Seriously considering either a preowned or an NOS 3940, I wonder wheth...

The unusual shape of this watch makes it

Interesting but not popular unfortunately. The 3940 has a well balanced dial. Will smaller watches make a come-back ? Probably! When ? Hopefully soon because I have a small wrist !🤣

Me too.

Thanks, G.

It could be achieved in an instant (e.g., with the good old caliber 240 Q), and I guess it will, at some point, happen, like all things…But I’d be surprised to see a new 36mm men’s PC being offered this decade.

It’s currently a very favorable market for small-sized watches, and the two you mentioned are great Patek PCs…if after trying on the new 5236P, you really find it too big, a NOS 3940 from a very trusted dealer is certainly an option😉 Enjoy.

All, I’m pleasantly surprised

You cannot go wrong with the 3940

Buy from a reputable dealer. Spend the money. The 3940 is going to be an elegant watch 100 years from now as it is today. It’s a perfect watch.

I am currently hunting a 3940 myself

NOS examples are very rare.

I wouldn't rule out another 5040

The 3940 is a classic, and an important one at that, but I wouldn't rule out another 5040. I like the fact that you can get one with Breguet hands/numerals or Arabic numerals (unlike the 3940). The case style isn't for everyone, but it certainly works for...

I think the 5040 is under-recognized

The tonneau shape isn't for everyone, which likely explains why.

Thank you, Spartacus

Your photo reminds me of the 5040R which I used to own and am sorry to have let go. I miss it. In any case, I like tonneau a lot but am going rectangular with a Tank Louis Cartier and then circular with the 3940 (either R or J) to complete my modest colle...

I really like the Breguet numerals and hands on your piece. IMHO, they complement the shape of the case better than the Arabic numerals and railroad track of mine.

Why thank you (as if I had anything to do with the design)

I think we have similar tastes - I also prefer the Breguet numerals to Arabic numerals on the 5040. I would not consider any collection modest if it has a 3940 - that would make it truly epic.
