F.P. Journe

When I first saw that our fearless leader and moderator had put up his beloved ruthenium collection for sale in the CM, I thought it couldn't be. I was perplexed, bewildered and confused. Then I read that the effort was to fund the purchase of a G&P Sonnerie. I was intrigued by this idea and after thinking about it for some time, I became very excited. I can only imagine how difficult of a decision it was for Brad to part with his truly beloved Ruthenium Collection, however, the idea of someone in our forum owning the G&P Sonnerie (to my knowledge I don't believe anyone in the forum owns one) and be willing to share with all members its beauty and sublimity is maybe the only slice of Journe that this forum is missing!

The G&P Sonnerie is a remarkable piece, the holy grail of the FP Journe collection. I'm surprised to see the same piece offered again at auction, only to be tempted with the desire to find it a perfect home. I've tried to quell my desire with discipline, offering some beloved pieces in exchange. But now after careful consideration I've decided this decision was temporary madness.

I hope you succeed in your pursuit of the sonnerie.  Along a similar train of thought, do you happen to know whether there is any news on the availability of the minute repeater souverain?

If I have read your comments correctly, does that mean you have decided against selling your collection?

That's right at least for now. I never considered selling my entire collection, instead just a few pieces. I admit it's a difficult exercise thinking about this decision. Appreciate all the PM's and support.

Just sell them already - Its enough.  How many resonances and calendriers can someone have.  I mean to have to wind 10 resonances might make me stab myself with a pallet fork . 

I have bought and sold my collection many times over.  Once they are gone - they are gone - and there is no looking back. 

Its part of the fun for me - to rotate the collection.  ROTATE YOURS!!!!

A very wise WIS once told me - it better to have 1 piece of pure, true horological importance than a collection of 20 {garbage} watches. 

If you sold a very small amount of your collection, you would be wearing the ultimate Journe.  I am willing to guarantee that once you strap that GS on your wrist, all the other pieces will be just that.....other pieces. 

Now, I'm hardly comparing a Resonance and Calendrier to a "garbage" watch - but, if you now had just 1 or 2 less of them - but a GS on your wrist - explain how that is wrong. 

Me personally, I could go through that collection of yours and easily spot the 10 or 15 watches which suck or are redundant. I'll get on a plane tomorrow - see you Saturday.  Get ready, the cleaner is coming. 

SELL THE WATCHES AND GET THE GS!!!!!!

Look at WHL - He did the right thing for us - he bought a JDN and is sharing it!  Now its your turn, Buy the GS and SHARE IT with us .

Quality definitely beats quantity in this case. Irrespective of the relative merits of each watch, I would always prefer to have one or two that are the best representatives of a group rather than multiple that give the breadth of a group but not the apogee.

I think the answer to this depends on the stage of ones collecting and what feels right at that time.

Bill has had the experience of owning many fine watches and was psychologically ready to consolidate to the Roth tourbillon.

I myself am enjoying owning a range of watches, but do expect to consolidate down to a smaller number of key watches at a future point. Just when that time will come I am not certain, but I expect to be comfortable with that decision and that is how I will know the time is right.
