F.P. Journe

After stumbling upon FP Journe a few weeks ago, I have done nothing but think of these watches. I think it is starting to interfere with my social life, hahaha. I have decided I have to have one. Narrowed it down to the Resonance or the Octa Calendrier (platinum with white gold dial on either). At first, the Resonance is the watch that made me fall in love with Journe. Not only is it one of the most unique faces I have ever seen, its certainly the most beautiful movement in the world. But, I must confess that all of a sudden, the Calendrier is growing on me. As much as I love the symmetry of the Resonance, I am finding myself drawn to the Calendrier's asymmetry.

I've been bitten by the FP bug. There is no turning back. I am just trying to decide which watch is the cure. Would love to get the room's opinion on each of them. I don't expect you to make the decision for me, but hopefully you can open my eyes a bit.

But think about what other watches you have. Do you already have another calendar?

And will this be your daily watch? With the Calendrier you will need to set up the date/month/day of the watch every time if you only wear it occasionally (unless you put it in a winder). On the other hand, the Resonance is manual wound and you'll have to do that every day. Do you need a dual time zone more than a Calendar? The answer to these questions might tell you which watch to get.

A few points you may want to consider.

First, the Resonance is iconic Journe, and it is the watch which caught the attention of most of us who have become fanatical Journe collectors. With the new interpretation of the Resonance upcoming, I am of the opinion that the earlier Resonance will become more sought after. You are right about the lovely symmetry of the Resonance, and I’ve never tired of wearing mine.

Second, the Calendrier is a wonderful retrograde watch, and as much as I admire the Octa movement, it lacks the fascination of the Resonance movement. Winding can become an issue, and some have found the Resonance somewhat difficult—I don’t share that view, and the experience of a daily wind when I am wearing the watch is part of the romance of the Resonance. Caution: I would not place the Calendrier in a watch winder, and Montres Journe has warned of the same; it is easy to damage the movement even with the best winders. The calendar functions are easy to use, though I admit to keeping mine wound each day for five + years with no issues.

For me, the Resonance has a unique design, wholly integrated, and beautiful in both design and execution. The Calendrier while functional and with a wonderful historic design is a second Journe and not a first—though I know for others that is not the case.

There is no easy answer. Both bring different qualities to the plate. I think my indecision stems from the fact I can't have both. That hurts ! In either case, you will be happy.

I have a lot to think about. Now I need to go get approval from the boss (theres a chance I get denied, hahaha). It may not happen as soon as I had hoped, but as soon as I have one on my wrist, you guys will be the first to see the wrist shots.

Tough decision..can't make a mistake with either if I had to pick it would be calendrier

If it were a matter purely of aesthetics, I'd go with the Calendrier.  But there is a mystique and individuality about the Resonance that makes it truly special.  And of course the traditional version of the Resonance -- which is what I assume you're considering -- is being discontinued (or so I understand), which makes it all the more special.  Bottom line:  I think I'd get the Resonance, but it is indeed hard to say, and I would vacillate too.

There is no comparison between the two.

One is a watch. The other is a Calendrier.

There is no difficult decision.
