Yes, they are different in many ways but have similar functions.   If you were to buy only one, which would it be?

This is very subjective, but since you've asked... the Lange 1 MP is a beautiful version of the iconic L1 and it works very well. I don't particularly like the Octa Lune, while I'm a big fan of Journes. I just don't think this permutation of the classic Journe RDM is as successful, but I'm sure many others would disagree with me.

Unfortunately I do not own either watch, but I’m not sure if that makes me more or less objective.J I love most of Journe's range, but for a moonphase watch, I would go with the Lange 1. The moon I think is better executed on the Lange and I like the larger more prominent stars. The automatic Octa movement versus the hand wound Lange might also influence the decision and whether or not you like the three-quarter plate design. The accuracy of the moonphase on the Lange is often trumpeted, but I am not sure how this compares with the Octa Lune, or if it really matters in practice – perhaps something akin to discussing the top speed of Ferrari versus Lamborghini; the trip is more important than the destination.

 

Both are great watches of course!

I love FPJ's work, but the L1 is an absolute classic. 

Particularly in PP version w/ blue strap.  Over the top beauty in an iconic piece.

Thanks everyone for your opinions. Now, I am really not sure but will try to see both again to see which one speaks to me. Surprisingly most votes have gone to the Lange. Surprising because this is an FPJ forum! I've also posted on the Lange forum and similar results.

By the way SRG, I am new to FPJ so not 100% sure but the boutique here in HK told me that customers can order any metal/dial comibination. Even the case size. It will take a month for a customized order...

I believe you can get a PT case with WG (grey) or RG dial, or an RG case with either dial.  I think the YG dials are not made anymore.  I would love to be wrong on that one.

octa lune or lange 1 moonphase...  i can't decide.  how about the lange perpetual as a tie breaker?

The perpetual is too expensive for me...how about the Lange 1 Timezone?  What do people think when compared to these two?

The L1 MP in PT (w/ the Lange dark blue strap) is killer.  Suited for Jeans or formal business atire.  The FPJ piece is also stunning.  The L1 TZ has a brilliant internal design, but (IMHO) its looks fall abit short.  Others, I guarantee, will disagree with me.

The Lange and the CS are both wonderful pieces.  But, if you can't choose between them, my best suggestion is to...........................      go for the PT Calendrier!

Thank you all for your valuable advice. I finally made up my mind about a month ago. I was indecisive and decided to go see a few watches - Lange Moonphase (Platinum), Chopard Lune One (perpetual calendar), IWC ref 5022 and the FP Journe Octa Lune. I followed many of your advice and the Octa "spoke" to me. It moved me versus the other watches that I simply 'would like to have' but they didn't move me like the Octa Lune did.

One month down the road, I am still enjoying the watch but the date and moonphase stopped advancing all of a sudden. Yes, I've read the manual and tried changing the date outside of the midnight vicinity but still no luck. Looks like the watch will go back to the boutique as soon as I get back to Hong Kong next week....
