We look forward to hearing more of your story - have you been into watches long? What drew you to Grand Seikos?

Cheers,

Thank you so much for the kind words and the warm welcome; happy to be here!

I have been through many Seikos and many other brands before finding Grand Seiko; I had been compelled to try them for some time and I finally decided to take the plunge a little while ago, by way of the SBGX063.  As crazy as it might sounds to someone who does not 'get' Grand Seiko, I sold a Rolex to bring home the GS, LOL.  From there, I fell in love with the flawless fit and finish and the super accurate, worry-free nature of the 9f movement.

I ended up selling the SBGX063, as I was swayed again by Rolex, but I missed the flawless nature of the GS... So, I decided to bring home one that caught my eye when it was first released, the SBGX093.  To me, GS perfectly embodies Japanese art, engineering / technology, and culture, which I have great appreciation for.  I am fortunate, that in my current position, I travel to Japan occasionally for business and therefore have firsthand experience.

The SBGX shares the watch box with the following:

Kobold R.E. Byrd; a very special watch to me for a couple of reasons:  1. I am from Western PA (Kobold's home) - I have a connection with Michael Kobold and 2. This one was an out of the blue gift from my Dad...  When he first gain interest in watches, I steered him towards Kobold (home team advantage!!).  He became enamored with the watches, the company, and the man behind the company, Michael.  In a short period he purchased the Spirit of America (I used to own one as well) and the R.E. Byrd.  I borrowed the Byrd, at his suggestion (“to try it out”), several months ago and have enjoyed it greatly.  Anyway, we were having a conversation a few days ago, and I told him that I felt bad that I still had his watch – well, he said that it was mine now.  ;-)

Omega Seamaster; my first ‘nice’ watch:

Seiko 5; my only other Seiko at this time:

Not pictured, are my 3 analogue Casios, vintage watches (including Accutron, Elgin, and others).

As mentioned, plenty of others have passed through my hands over the years; I tried to capture some of them below (including my history with Seiko!) - just to be clear, these are watches that I no longer have in the stable...  smile

Oye...  better stop there; I am missing many others, LOL.

Wonderful (and typical) history of a watch lover

One (a spouse, for example) might say you clearly possess more "watch interests" than you have "watch restraint" - one primary definition of a collector, and one reason why you will feel a warm welcome from kindred spirits.

How do you like that new GS?

You are spot on...

Ha ha; yes, you are right.  As of late, I have really stopped buying, selling, and trading, which may indicate that I am really happy with my current GS and other watches.  To me, the SBGX093 (and 091) does a great job of both sport and business casual. It has impressive sport watch credentials, including high magnetic resistance, a chunky (and beautify crafted) case, bright lume, screw down crown, and 100m of water resistance.

Although, at the same time, it easily crosses into the world of business casual watches. With a button shirt, peaking out from under the cuff, it looks very conservative and restrained. IMO, it plays the role of an Omega Aqua Terra but with the 'sport' turned up only a bit. Although, with a short sleeve shirt, it becomes a (restrained) sport watch again.  In summary, I am very pleased with the SBGX093!!

Just my 2円.

Thank you again for the warm welcome!

And thanks for sharing this beautiful piece with us as well as detail out your horological journey. It's always interesting to read of another's journey and how we change and adopt our tastes and preferences as we go along. Seiko's for sure have a special place in the horological world, and it's too much under appreciated IMO. They make superb watches, and the GS line especially is as close to flawless while retaining every day use qualities, and I would consider them superior to most big brands out there.

Sharing my one and only GS at this time, and I completely understand what it means to be taken in by these GS'. So happens I happen to be wearing this today smile
