The start of the evolution - the SLGH005 White Birch 🇯🇵
Not a new watch anymore but what a blast when it came out! A new movement with a completely different architecture to what one was used to from GS, a new case design language and of course - possibly most memorably - the white birch dial.
While the dial tends to concentrate most of the attention on it, there is so much more to the watch. The tiger stripe lugs, with alternating finishes, showing off zaratsu to perfection. The case, which sits well on most wrists and isn’t riding high, like many previous GS cases. The wide lug design at 22mm. And of course the movement. The Lee are new hour indices and hands, too - those more an acquired taste (but certainly distinctively GS).
It was a bold move from GS and the new generation has taken off quite nicely since, with several dials, a Spring Drive and other variations.
Any others on this weekend?
Grand Seiko is emerging as a real powerhouse and people are beginning to recognize not only the value, but the quality of the product itself.
And rightfully so 😊👍🏻
The only downside seems to be that the new movements are harder to regulate quite as precisely as the older ones 🤷🏻♂️ Mine is still keeping excellent time, though 😊

I was thinking about getting a GS....
but never got around to it simply because I focused, and am still focused, on the more expensive and 'elitist' offerings from JLC, VC etc. This despite me loving them immensely and thinking nothing less of them in terms of artisanal execution.... 🙃

When I joined the GS9 club to get the
Matsumoto Castle I chose a Green Birch.
You had to buy a second watch to get one.
I was drawn to the beauty of the movement.
When I first saw these hands on a Lake Suwa.
I was a little taken aback, but then came to
really love them. And I love the Evo9 case.
I chose green because it was my son's
favorite color when he was little, thinking
my collection will be his one day. Hopefully not to soon!

The only thing that I see as a worrying development is that they required you to buy another watch to get it. GS did fine without, not sure I am happy where this is going 🧐

Interestingly enough, when I went to the boutique they
told me it didn't matter the price of the piece - I could have
bought a lady's snowflake for 2300. But that was like throwing
away money to me. I have no significant other to give it to.
On a happy note, my son graduates college a week from tomorrow
and as a present he's getting a Grand Seiko GMT sbgm 221. Can't
wait to give it to him! Again, love your White Birch. In the catalogue
it's one that really stands out!

Btw, some months ago there was a letter posted on this site
by Thierry Stern. Retailers were making customers
buy either jewelry or another watch to get a Patek
that they wanted. He made it clear in no uncertain
terms that there would be severe repercussions if
any AD continued to do this.
I wish that actually happens…
Don’t fully trust the brands’ honesty in such cases 😉 Maybe I am just jaded 😂🤷🏻♂️
