I have been told that surveys at the turn of the century showed US customers see Seiko as a $400 watch. But that doesn't mean that
watch collectors see it as such, or that Seiko haven't been able to push the bar higher. Perhaps this is going slower than we might wish (if we want to resell the watch for a higher price) and with it's happening with a few maneuvers and marketing that show plenty of "Oriental Inscrutability". But still, Seiko is moving up their image, globally, on several fronts. Grand Seiko is one. Astron is another.
For example, as Seiko rep said at Basel,
"We are delighted that many tens of thousands of customers like its style and very highest quality; Astron is a prestige watch and people are very happy to invest 2000 Euro or more in it. Some think that electronic watches must be inexpensive. We do not!"
Why should an electronic watch cost 2-5 times as much as your mobile phone? Because it talks to 12 satellites, it charges itself, and it sets itself. And is made of titanium, sapphire, mother-of-pearl, etc. You look at your wrist and say "Dang me, that's cool". Now an Apple watch is also cool, but it's high maintenance. You have to charge it all the time, you have to do software updates, blah blah blah. The Astron is wear it and love it. No hassle.
Moving onto Grand Seiko, I have been hanging around the GS world for about 12 years now, which a long time if you are 25 but not so long if you are 65 like I am. And definitely not long if you are 135 as Seiko the company is. In that time I have seen reactions from people changing. At first, it was:
"What kind of watch is that? A SEIKO?????? Cool. Cheap right? You paid how much for it? WHAT!!!!
To,
"A Grand Seiko, eh? I've heard about those."
To,
"I see you're wearing a Grand Seiko, a friend of mine has one of those and I'm thinking about the blue dial, no date model myself."
Now as to the other brands, I think CASIO is 99% G-SHOCK and Citizen is 99% Eco-Drive, as AP is seen as 99% ROYAL OAK OFFSHORE. They have been so successful with one product line, or technical feature, that the corporate identity has been submerged into it. I don't see them as wide-selection brands, offering mechanical, quartz, solar, etc. (personally) and I'm not sure what the average person on the street thinks.
The words Cheap, reliable, forgettable, come to my mind. Even though I had "The Citizen" which is a $2000 high-end quartz model it didn't have the feel of quality that a comparable GS does.
