Hi guys,
I happened to see this 'museum piece' on a site yesterday.

The price was quoted in six figures. Is this in the neighborhood of true?

Again, just trying to learn something... THis being a 'value' question, I am aware we must keep this very focused on the watch's attributes... but again... I'm just seeking to learn... I did a search of milsub and came up with little except some nice pics and general discussions... hope this question is okay. If not.... please delete... respectfully, M.

AS you can probably tell... I'm just learning about the vintage world... although I've admired so many great vintage watches from a distance. I appreciate your indulgence as I awkwardly move forward!

At least as far as I am concerned, if you had not dug out this post I might never have read it.

Without criticizing the importance of the Milsub, I would say that other military Subs, among the Rolex ( 5513 Marine Nationale ) or among the Tudor ( 7924 ) are much rarer than the British 5513 / 5517, as less than 100 were made for the 5513 M.N and 200 or 300 for the Tudor 7924, and much more " underated ".

So the Rarity cannot explain all.

I've been looking at watches I have not looked at much in my collecting 'career' ... it's fun! But it would certainly be easy to be taken advantage of... I'll be studying and not buying for a time.... I think one of the nicer things about vintage collecting though, is the complete and utter randomness and mystery of WHERE these watches are and WHO has them or will have them... unlike new watches, nothing is written in stone--and price, obviously, can be based upon hunger only! I do like the idea that you would usually be buying from either a fellow collector or a dealer who has to love vintage himself at least a little--in order to amass a good knowledge base...

Just thinking out loud and thanks while I 'learn to dance' to this different music!

(Today I found two very rare Breitling Chronomat 808's with black outer rings on dials--studied their fine details in pictures for, well, probably over an hour... were they correct and real... etc, etc)

you are assuming that the French military is as appealing as the British military......

The ability to tunefully fart Christmas carols is also rare, but not necessarily a trait i would want!!!

 

Happy Christmas my (very) french friend. But you are right that the Rolex MN is a beauty....and as you know I came very close to buying one. In the end, i decided against, but it was close. Now, if Joan of Arc had been the original owner...... then that would have been an altogether different proposition.
