I own the watch and I wear it a lot when I am diving.
The only reason why I wear the watch on my dives is that it is too thich and too heavy to wear in everyday life. However, I am also every now and then wearing on my dives Rolex Submariner, Blancpain FF, GP Sea Hawk... All these watches feel really good and light under the surface compared to SDDS.
Furthermore, in my opinion the depth rating of the Sea Dweller Deep Sea is nothing but stupidity. All in all, I regret very much buying this watch.
Subjective, but I hope this helps.

Kari
I'm not so sure, Nico.
From what Karl wrote, and I don't want to put words in his mouth, it's bulky, even underwater. So not a great tool.
In any case, apart from a (frankly, ridiculous) increased depth rating what does this watch offer over the Sea Dweller? Now, That is a saturation diver's watch.

Nicolas,
The problem with SDDS in my opinion is that it is too THICK; not the diameter. Due to the thickness I have scratched the watch big time to the corals, wrecks, etc. And my SDDS has only some 100 dives behind.
At the same time I find my Submariner, BP FF, GP SH much frendlier watches for diving. I will get soon JlC NSA and I look forward taking that under the surface and if I would have one extra Polaris, I would try that too.
Rolex SDDS is a fine watch and it is really well made. But as said, I have a problem with that. It is too thich for casual use and for me, it is too thich for diving purposes.
Best,
Kari
But as you say, those were historical models.
The main issue I have is that the Deep Sea, as a 'Tool' offers nothing over the SeaDweller, except bulk.
As for bulky, wait until you see my vintage Decompression meter...THAT is bulky!
(As an aside, where did this 'tool' watch term originate? If I have a torch that goes to 200m, is that a tool torch?
, do Speedies count as tool-watches? Maybe another post for another day....)
Hi Nicolas,
I'm dreaming about some new watches in Mexico City at the moment... And it is 05:20 am lt here. I must be crazy.
Yes, the Sea Dweller Deep Sea is a tool watch. But if a similar brarelet and bezel is added to a Submariner (300 m), that is in my opinion even a better tool watch.
Sure, it is fine that Rolex is illustrating that their watch can dive to "Titanic". However, no man can dive to depths where a Submariner would start to leak.
I think that the SDDS is a bit heavy and thick even for scuba diving but sure, that's a matter of taste.
Regards,
Kari
PS. All my daughters (15 y, 13 y. and 10 y.) are now certified divers. I will come with them in mid April to Paris to look for ideal diving watches for ladies. I hope Rolex will surprise us all with a Lady Submariner but if not, we could perhaps meet in a small Boutique from where I got my -65 Tribute...
