Okay this came out only about one day after my farewell post to my 104...

Actually I already purchased this watch before I sold my 104... And I just received it today....

I've got many sleepless night this past week because of the excitement of getting this piece....

So finally......



Can anybody guess???

Well on my farewell post I said I that I was getting something similar but has a closer link to the history...

Here it is... My latest....







Why something similar to the 104?

Well it's simply that I really like dial layout of Luminor Marina with the second hand, IMO it fits the personality of the watch perfectly...









As I've mentioned before... I have been craving for a tritium dial Panerai...

And I found this one with a fat and creamy colored indexes... I really think that the dial is just stunning....

I can't stop starring at it..... Just beautiful...

And the best thing is that now I have a 44mm Luminor again... I think the design and the size of the case is just perfect for my wrist...

So here's the wristshot...



Can this be a start of my new journey? I really hope it is...

This is technically not a PreA series... In fact it is an A series with a PreA dial... I was actually looking to get a 1A but I found this...

To those who are not familiar with, there are actually some ways to differentiate a PreA series with a normal A series panerai... This is what my friends told me... Please correct me if I'm wrong...

1. If the case number is 6500 it is 100% a PreA panerai... The relationship between serial number (BB) and millesimation number (0XXX/1000) is always consistent and logical. This last principle holds true for all pre-A's.

EG: OP 6500 – BB970001=0001/1000 or OP 6500 – BB970499=0499/1000

2. If the case number is 6502 without A-prefix on the millesimation number it is 100% a PreA Panerai..

For OP 6502 pre-A watches of the second batch of the first series, the last four digits of the BB-number or serial number minus 400 (for the Mare Nostrums), should equal the four digits of the millesimation number. Format: BB 97XXXX – 400=YYYY/1000.

EG: OP 6502 – BB971000=0600/1000 or OP 6502 – BB971294=0894/1000.


3. And if the case number is 6502 with A-prefix on the millesimation number... The relation between the BB number and the millesimation number has to corelate...  For pre-A OP 6502 watches with prefix "A", the last four digits of the BB-number or serial number minus 1400, should equal the four digits of the millesimation number. Format: BB 97XXXX – 1400=A0YYY/1000.

EG: OP 6502 – BB971401=A0001/1000 or OP 6502 – BB971621=A0221/1000.


And here's mine....





I've done a research before purchasing the watch and I know what I was getting... I've talked to several experts about it... Some supported me to purchase this piece and some don't...

I didn't buy it because it looks like a PreA... I bought it simply just because of the beautiful dial.. Is it original from the factory? Well I'd never know..
There are some other similar cases... A preA 4 with a preVendome 203/A dial, a 40B with PreA T-SWISS-T dial, a 55 with PreA 2 T-SWISS-T dial...

What matter to me the most is now I can admire the beauty of the PreA dial on my 1A..

I hope you guys appreciate it as much as I do...

1/ apologizes, as I didn't know that you wanted to do a separate post on the Pre A..

2/ Thanks a lot for such a quality answer. It was a pleasure to read it and brought me back to the " Good Old Time ".  

3/ I would rather compare the Pre A 1 to the 5218-205/A so called " Submersible Slytech " .

Here's a bad picture I took some 5 years ago, with its 2 sisters, the 301 and the 207/A:

But you're right when you mention the Pre A 4 and the Pam 40, as, indeed, we saw some Pre A dials on them.

4/ About getting it or not, the most important is that you knew what you bought, and that you were pleased with, indeed.

These dials are basically the same than their Pre V " brothers " at the exception of the writing " T- Swiss- T " which didn't exist on these last one, but which are very particular on the Pre A dials.

These fat numbers are really appealing, Sam.

Since you brought it up, there's nothing wrong to talk about it here....

1. I actually had a lot of fun learning about preA and preVendome panerai and talking to some experts regarding their opinion and their thoughts on these kind of watches..

2. About the comparison with 205/A, the submersible slytech... It is the closest thing to PreA 1... I've never seen the submersible slytech in person, but if I was given the choice, I would still choose the PreA1... Simply because I don't like the idea of a watch being related to some famous movie stars... Although I know that this actor has done an important part in the history of the brand...

3. And lastly the dial is something really special... It is a subtle difference but made a huge impact on the total appearance of the watch, yet not being flashy...
This is the closest thing to the PreVendome panerai that I can afford right now with almost one third of the price of the real preV... I'm still hoping one day I will be able to own the ultimate panerai, the preVendome logo..

I totally agree with your point 3.

I guess that it is what makes all the value of some watches like Panerai or Rolex, in the Vintage world.

But it is true that it makes a BIG difference when you look at the whole watch.

I also understand your " reserves " about the cosigned dial of the " Slytech Series ".

But it was an important era, which gave its name to the " Projetto Slytech " which inspired a lot Panerai when bought by Cartier Vendome.

I have 20 Panerais but if you were to take pictures of my wrist, of late, you'd photograph a 22B, 26B, 1A or a 201A LOGO...
