Officine Panerai

Hello all,

I'd like to introduce myself - I am new to this forum, and new to Panerai ownership.  I received my watch as a gift from my lovely wife and decided to take a moment to learn more about this beautiful watch and the unique culture of owners behind it.


Actually I've always wanted a Panerai and hinted to the brand as a gift.  So...I finally got one.

But after browsing through this forum, I've got a ton of noob questions.  I've tried the search engine, but instead of getting any answers...just more questions.

I guess the most recurring ones are:

1.  Why no Daylights/Chronograph models?  I guess I feel a little left out, but my new Panerai is a K (2008) production PAM 00250 Luminor Daylight Chrono.  But all the GTG pictures with tons of watches on the table, and it's mainly Marina's, GMT's and some Subs.  How come there's no love for Daylights?

2.  Butterfly deployant clasp vs PAV buckle?  Again, a table full of Panerai's and not one deployant clasp.  It seems nobody keeps the standard equipped deployant clasp?

3.  Brown leather vs black leather straps?  Everybody's got brown?

I wish to graduate into the culture of 'Paneristi' and earn my Panerai manhood.=)

I few tips for the noob?  Please help.  Thank you all in advance.

Welcome to the forums. Congrats on your wonderful gift!

There are many possibilities to your questions. Keep in mind that pics of the GTG's don't show all the watches that the attendees have. Certain models are more popular and the passion for them is more intense so you will see more of them in the post.

As for color of straps, it's just preference. Usually the Panerai guys have a assortment of different shades of colors. Brown does seem like the favorite color. When I had my first PAM, i got the brown alligator and wasn't sure I would like it. But after a few hours, it looked great!

Don't worry too much about what others have and in what color. As long as you are enjoying your watch, that's the most mportant part.

The Daylight is a wonderful chrono that may indeed be under appreciated - go with your heart and if you like it, that's what counts. As for pictures of GTGs, some participants have a few Panerai watches and perhaps they decide to bring along their 'historic line' pieces, especially early ones which are more rare and sought after. That would explain the reason for posting a lot of brown/tan straps with tang buckles - more in line with the vintage/historic look. BUT, at home/office as a daily wear, I am sure many like the contemporary models on deployant (as you call 'butterfly') or even bracelets,,,,,,I know I do

In any case, hope you enjoy the passion and the history, this forum is a great place to learn about our favorite brand!

Thanks Asi, for the explanation.

I have no less love for my chrono, but tapping into your collective wisdom sure helps set things right for me.

That being said, I checked all of the local AD's in the area and most had a very limited selection of Luminor Marina's, and nobody carried the Luminor GMT I originally wanted (correction, there was one that was reserved three months in advance by someone which I tried to pick up for myself to no avail=).

They all shared the same answer too, that they were uncertain if the next shipment would have any as well since they just sort of arrive randomly?  It wasn't much of comforting answer, and the conversion of my local currency against the USD isn't so good right now, so the option of buying it at the Bev Hills boutique hasn't been so appealing (I had considered it since I would be returning to the states at the end of Dec).

I like the busier looking dial of the chrono, but can't help to lust for the OG big numbered luminors.  My wife thinks I'm crazy and made it clear that she wasn't splurging on another anytime soon!=)

Of Panerai. That includes PAV straps, brown leathers, T-dials etc...

I'm a owner of a PAM90 power reserve which is a "sleeper" as well, but I like it! Great everyday watch! It's an auto, got a date, minute markers and the useful power reserve indicator. And so is your Daylight chrono! It is an auto and has the useful chrono functions which the Historic models lack. Also I found the conpemporary Panerais fits really good with OEM gators in different colors. They make the watch really dressy So don't let this bothers you. You got a great watch and just enjoy wearing it

Hey, don't be so sad...The most important is that you're in love with your watch, after all.

Another thing is that while a watch is not much appreciated today, it may be much more appreciated tomorrow.

Remember the very first weeks and days of the life of Panerai...

So, you see, things can change in the mentalities.

Is the Daylight a nice Watch?

Yes, of course!

Is it representative to the Panerai History?

Maybe not, but once again, who cares?

If you're in love with it, this is the only thing that counts.

Hey Arthur,

Just had a new PAM 250 delivered to my doorstep yesterday morning from the Netherlands.  First Panerai.

Wore it to work yesterday, and needless to say, didn't get work much done unless I count the 2 straps I ordered for it!

Enjoy the watch....it's a beauty!ful timepiece.

At least you got around to actually ordering straps.  I'm still looking around the sea of many.

May I ask which one you decided on and where you ordered it from?

Thought  I'd walk before I run....

Ordered 2 Heroic 18 Poseidon's..... Italian Solid Black and Aged Cocoa.

I like the hand-stitched look and wax threading...

Want to assure fit, etc. before I venture out to the more custom straps....ie: Simona, Mario Paco, Ted Su, Manifatture Firenze .....
