Has anyone come across any discussions on the comparison of these 2 timepieces in this forum? I was nearly set on getting the perpetual calendar, as I think that is quite a useful function, until I saw this panomatic lunar platinum with a black dial today, which has since started to grow on me! As my first GO, I was advised to get the pano. But I'm worried the price of a perpetual calendar may shoot to a point beyond my reach when I'm prepared to get a 2nd GO. Comments from anyone would be most appreciated. Thanks!

Of the 2 splendid photos, the pano was taken by Marcus few years ago, and the senator was taken by a fellow Purists whose name I couldn't remember but thanks for posting it in the first place!

It hurts to see the pt black dial PML after just getting the blue dial ss.  I'd say that pt black dial is just about the nicest combo for a casual watch.  Personally, I think that's the big difference.  PML in black dial is casual while the senator of any kind is more a dress watch.  Again, personally, I think the senator perpetual is one of the nicest executed perpetuals.  Very nicely layed out dial, not busy at all.  In terms of collecting, I think the pt black dial PML is a special edition that's no longer made while the senator is annually produced. 

If I was given the choice, I'd take the pt black dial PML, even with my current PML.

photos that you have kindly shared with us here Learner. I could almost feel your excitement out of it! It has never been my intention to sabotage anyone's joy. My sincere apologies if the black dial photos did that. I think the blue dial looks good too in its own way and quite a few others think that too in this forum. And it seems the blue dial is no longer available in some countries, which makes it even more collectible! Your comments on the PML and senator perpetual is very well said. And I have to say that it's one of my very favourite GO...
The wieght of the platinum, the nice finish, the comfort on the wrist and the eshtetic of this watch achieves to make it very appealing!

I was on to buy it, but my Breguet Type XX in platinum arrived at the same time...

. . . offered #1 of the PML platinum limited edition, and tried it on the day after it arrived at the retailer . . . I passed on it because I'd just purchased my first Karree perpetual, and wasn't prepared to shell out even more at the time. What a dunce I was! The choices you've set up for yourself are difficult, and there's really no right choice in this match-up. I have a predilection for perpetuals, so if I were making the decision for myself AND if I didn't already have a perpetual, I would go for the cal 100 Senator perpetual, and probably on a bracelet as pictured recently on the forum. The PML movement is extremely attractive, but nothing (in my humble opinion) captures the essence of watchmaking like the magic a perpetual calendar works at the end of every February. Also remember that the PML is available in a number of iterations, including a truly handsome blue dial and a stunning black dial in rose gold, so you've got the opportunity to put together a complementary brace of G O's for less outlay with the perpetual first . . . cordially, Art

but my preference would be the Senator perpetual. I've also seen it with a bronze-ish colored dial... very nice.

it IS a difficult decision I've landed myself into! This forum becomes a invaluable avenue for advice ;-). Well it was indeed quite an opportunity cost to forego the #1 in a limited edition for another. That is one of the reasons I'm seriously considering the PML black dial, and also black dial seems to be more harmoniously blended into a PT case (or SS case if only...) compared to a PG case; just my personal opinion. Having said that, I do NOT currently own any perpetual calendar timepieces, and that was what started my crusade of getting to know GO in the first place! It is delightful to learn that GO is recognised as "the JLC of Germany", which I read somewhere in this forum. For someone who DIDN'T know the brand any better (me!), that provided the needed assurance and trust to invest in a GO. So the contemplation continues of which GO to go for...

However do indulge me with some final questions (I promise!) : <1> a watch with perpetual calendar not only adjust for leap year, it also recognises the shorter / longer months and adjust the day and date accordingly. Is that correct? <2> the website says that the date will be correctly displayed until year 2100. What happens after that? Just curious! <3> have you heard of any news of a price increase in 2008? Please do not feel oblige to comment on #3 if we are not suppose to raise such topic in the forum. Many thanks Art!

Thanks for the comment Bob. I just went into the GO website to check it out. Looks pretty good in greyish dial, though a tad too "fashionable" for me when it also comes with a matching greyish strap! But it looks good nevertheless.

. . . referring to the champagne dial that's available only in a rose gold case; he might be referring to the salmon dial of the previous generation Senator perpetual equipped with the cal 39 movement, which is no longer in production. The anthracite dial in steel is my favorite of the current line-up, but the version I'm hoping for would be a Navigator . . . that would be quite special indeed!

Yes, a perpetual calendar transitions from month to month taking into account the differing number of days in each month, including February's in both leap and non-leap years . . . it is, essentially, an analog computer. All six G O perpetuals in our celebration performed as expected, including my Karree perpetual that had been running continuously for three years. The reason why a G O perpetual - and practically any other perpetual calendar, for that matter - won't perform properly in 2100 is due to the vagaries of the Gregorian calendar: the years 2100, 2200, and 2300 aren't leap years, but 2000 was and 2400 will be. The nub of the matter is that your great grandson will have to manually advance the date on February 28th 2100 . . . a problem, to be sure, but hardly insurmountable ;-). And yes, there was a price increase recently in the US, although I'm not sure if prices were realigned elsewhere Best of luck with your decision, and please post photos when your G O arrives . . . cordially, Art

If I remember correctly, it could've been champagne or even the salmon, but it was definitely SS, not RG. And, i think you are right, it could've been the cal 39

I misinterpreted the piece you were referring Bob. Thanks Art for all the explanations in detail. A step forward for my education in horology! An analog computer; that's an artistic combo ;-). It will be my greatest pleasure to post photos when the time comes!
