There were once three brothers, triplets. All were abused as children - as toddlers, by their uncle, and as teens, by their alcoholic and physically abusive father.

One grew up dark and cynical, finding a sick pleasure in seeing harm and pain inflicted on others.  In a way, he was a product of his environment - as he was abused and hurt as a child, so too would he inflict abuse and suffering on others.

Another brother grew up kind and loving - often selfless, he would give the shirt off his back to someone in need and would go out of his way to help others, even total strangers.  In a way, he too was a product of his environment - as he was abused and hurt as a child, he knew too well the suffering, and he would try his best that no one else should know such pain.

The third brother grew up to keep his head low and to mind his own business. He neither helped nor hurt others, he just wanted to live his life, alone, in his own peace.  His own experiences neither inspired nor tainted his take on life. 

And each lived, each in his own world.

Life is about choices. Too often society today seems to encourage irresponsibility and egocentrism - take credit for good, disavow responsibility for bad by blaming everyone / everything else - parents; adults; TV; the internet; voices in your head. 

But compare this with 150 years ago, when even children were held accountable as adults and being poor was an offense punishable by...

And so the social pendulum swings...

Absolutely, but quite often we forget that it is us who have to take the decision to choose.

Viktor E. Frankl comes to my mind - the founder of logotherapy and the author of Nevertheless, they YES to life. One of my all time favorite books.

We seem to come from the same cultural back ground. Victor Frankl made a lasting impression on me in my youth when we read the book at high school.

In the end: what ever happens to you, if you have a purpose, then you have a reason and a means to overcome.

Today, we often forget about the freedom of will. We cry for social welfare to help the less advantaged, denying that people can break out of their environment if they really want to.

We have a choice, every day. But making choices is often uncomfortable and irritating to others. But without making choices we will change nothing.
