So our TO moderator DRMW was too kind to present me today with the snack I was looking forward to trying the most . Yes, the MEIJI Corn Puff Snack or as I believe fellow member KIH mentioned 'the curl' as they call it in Japan. The front of the bag is printed with characters that look somewhat like this J7-IL and it has the great looking mascot depicted eating cheese and chips . I genuinely have to say that it's among the best corn puff snacks that I've tasted. Perhaps even the best one because of the consistency of the snack and the fact that it does not leave messy residue behind as opposed to other snacks like Cheetos etc. It is also a very neutral tasting snack (in other words not a strong, overwhelming taste) which I very much prefer. There are of course plenty different tastes of the snack so they might leave a different impression, this conclusion was reached after trying only the cheese flavor! At the end of the day, as I've learned that the people of Japan love this snack not only because it tastes good, but because it reminds them of their childhood I've got to admit that it put me in the same sort of reflective mood because I've eaten plenty of a similar tasting snack back when I was growing up . Bottom line is I loved the snack and would recommended it to anyone looking for something tasty in between meals, especially if you like corn puff type snacks! Cheers, Filip

I'm a big fan of Cheetos (Cheese Puffs not the Crunchy!)  but the new style is kinda weird, the pieces are too big and dries out the mouth too fast.  These Meiji Corn Puffs (btw, what the heck is Karl Cheese flavor?  ) are pretty good and as you said more natural tasting.  Try the banana ones, I think you might like them!

Cheetos in a long time because I could never deal with having to clean my fingers and mouth after each bite LOL. I'm definitely going to try out the Banana flavor next!

Yes, Curl has been quite popular since I was little for school excursion and any other snack time.  I am glad the taste is universal   I also heard that, and I was actually asked to bring back, "Pocky" is pretty big among US kids, too?

Pocky snacks are great too! I've tried them before! I really look forward to trying other Meiji snack flavors . The one thing that kind of surprised me is that the opening for the snack is on the back of the bag instead at the top as it is most of the time here in the US! Japanese people have always had more logical and intelligent packaging LOL . Also, what does the J7-IL lettering actually mean? Does that perhaps spell 'the curl'? Love your bit of humor amidst the terrible circumstances .

I had to look closely where "J7-IL" is on the package and finally found it.  It is Japanese character (Katakana), saying "Curl".  I was also surprised to find the English name of this snack is actually "Karl" as printed on the package.  I have been thinking the name tells the shape of the snack, which is curly and thus the name is "curl".  I have no idea where or who did the translation... indeed, lost in translation... 

As in the case of Curl (I stick to this name), Pocky has lots of flavors, localy limited edition flavor, seasonal special flavor, and such. 

Just don't eat these snacks too much, Filips!

PS: really the situation is normal here in Tokyo and we are having almost normal daily lives

I must say I better take your advice seriously, considering I'm spending most of my time behind the PC it really wouldn't do me well to eat many bags of any snack within a short period of time . I also think that 'Curl' is much more appropriate and obviously the original description and intention from the manufacturer. I'm really happy to know that at least people in Tokyo are having normalcy in their daily lives!
