Today is the day I'm supposed to have a light lunch, to make room for the long anticipated "huge" dinner I am going to enjoy tonight.  My friends and I decided to go to Church & State, in Little Tokyo (Downtown Los Angeles!), for a quick (yes, that what I had to tell my boss ) lunch.

Inside the restaurant, right before it was filled with the lunch crowd:

Warm baguette anyone?

We had a few of these fries... then we realized that none of us ordered this... oh well, Thanks to our neighboring table

Moules Mariniere: Mussels, white wine, pommes frites, aioli.  This is really good!!

Escargots de Bourgogne: Snails baked in garlic and parsley butter. This reminds me of the lobster in pot pie I had at Craft dinner.  The right amount of flakiness at the crust and the escargot....

My friend's ordered Bouillabaisse: Provencale fish soup, prawns, mussels, clams.

Order of Loup de Mer ala Genobloise: Sea bass, cauliflower, brown butter, lemon and capers. The sea bass was really good, very moist with a nice crunchy skin.

As I mentioned that the best is yet to come, here it is: Moelle de Boeuf - Roasted marrow bone! I've been wanting to try their bone marrow for the past few months, and I'm so happy that I finally get to try it.

 

The close up... see, I've told you that I'm having "light" lunch *guilty*

Oh yeah, not forgetting the tasty Poulet Roti: Roasted chicken, bacon, carrots, mushrooms, red wine sauce:

Of course we've to be healthy. So we ordered Chou de Bruxelles: Brussels sprouts, Medjool dates, chili. I actually had a few of these, and they are yummy!

Since I had a few brussels sprouts, I should be rewarded with this: Chocolat Pot de Creme. Yep, it's a chocolate pudding with candied nuts.

Food was definitely tasty and it's a friendly place for small GTG.  It wasn't my birthday, however for some reasons all of my "weight-conscious" friends always give me their b-day dessert .  Oh well, their "loss" is my "gain"

Ahhh, bone marrow...

I still remember my bone marrow I had in my Osso Bucco when I was at La Campana in Rome during Christmas of 2008.

La Campana is one of the oldest surviving restaurants in the world. It has operated for centuries without interruption. Kind of hard to imagine that this restaurant is older than venerable watch brands such as Blancpain and Vacheron Constantin...

The dinner I had was more superb than my lunch! Hopefully, in the near future, hopefully a Purists will do a write up on WFED on this... maybe not, 'cause I'll be craving for the "heavy" dinner again

Marrow is one of my favorite indulgences.  Yum!  Spreading it on the toasted bread must've been heavenly.  I would've had a hard time being productive at work afterward, however.  LOL!

There's a pizza joint near my office called Caioti Pizza Cafe where they serve a small, thin crust flatbread type item that has bone marrow, goat cheese, and flax seeds on it that you might like.  It's my second favorite thing to eat there after the Bachelor's Eggs, which they only do for breakfast.  Bachelor's Eggs are what we call "eggs in a basket" back home (A round hole is cut out of a piece of toast and then an egg is cracked into the hole while on the griddle, and the whole thing is cooked.).

It sure was tough to work after the lunch... that's why I had to take another lunch break to post my meal at Time Out .

Hope you get to try a meal at Church & State soon and share with us your experience.  I definitely look forward to another meal there in the near future; with a must try list of Iced Kumomoto oysters, charcuterie, Foie Gras and Braised beef short rib with caramelized onions & gruyere cheese

Dinner was at this "secret" location, where the chef has to like you in order for you to dine... or even allowed you into the restaurant! Thankfully I lucked out and was invited by a fellow purists to experience a "heavy" dinner!

Do check out WFED forum in the near future, for a glimpse of this "secret" place. In the interim, here's a picture of the appetizers, our 1st course to the "heavy" dinner

Thanks for checking! My dinner dessert was white chocolate with raspberry ice cream. It was so good that I'm craving for more... or maybe because I only had 1/2 of the portion tonight, as some of my dinner companions took 1/2 bowl of my ice cream?

Thanks for checking. Hurry up and make reservation to Church & State . It might be rather tricky to find the restaurant, as it's located at the old Nabisco building at the stranded part of downtown LA. Or you can always take me there and I can help you to navigate .
