In 1962, the American aircraft carrier USS Independence, crossing the path of this ship, asked via light flashes to identify itself. When it responded "Training Ship Amerigo Vespucci", it greeted it with the expression that has gone down in history: "You are the most beautiful ship in the world".
Nicely, 60 years later, another American aircraft carrier, the USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77 Nimitz-class), crossed the path of the Vespucci in transit from Manfredonia to Taranto in the lower Adriatic. The commander, Captain David-Tavis Pollard, in memory of the historic event that occurred with the USS Independence, asked via radio "are you the sailing ship Amerigo Vespucci of the Italian Navy?"
To the affirmative response of Captain Massimiliano Siragusa, the Americans responded: "after 60 years you're still the most beautiful ship in the world".
Leaving these nice anecdotes, the Amerigo Vespucci is an Italian training ship launched in 1931 in the port of Castellammare di Stabia, near Naples: it is a three-masted sailing ship, 101 metres long and 15.5 metres wide.
She arrived Saturday 1st in Trieste after a two-year journey around the world, touching many ports in all 5 continents, welcomed by thousands of people who came to admire this jewel of the sea... being present was mandatory!
Here are some photos (forgive my inability in this art) taken shortly after its docking in the port of Trieste!
A special greeting goes to Amanico and KMII, as we spent here a wonderful day some years ago...
Have a nice day, dear Friends.
