TimeOut

Walking the Wooded Area

We took a stroll in the shadiest part of town we know of, to keep cool and out of the sun, while still outside. This neighborhood has no views of the ocean, no views of the bay, few stores within walking distance, and is one of the oldest in San Diego. Therefore -- Interesting, at least to us.

We parked in the cool shade of an old pepper tree, and started walking up an alley. Although it's gravel and the houses look a bit tired from the back, this is a $2-5 million neighborhood. 🤷🏻‍♂️

This building, on the back of a lot, looked like a Carriage House to me - with its three double arched doors, oil or gas pumps on each side probably added when the Model T came along, etc.

Another old back-of-the-lot garage, with room on top.

Fence is probably even older than my Seiko, which was made in my 18th birthday month.

Fence too tall to peek over, but it looks like it might have been a stable. Or still could be.

This is highly unusual -- we are in the alley and that's the street in the distance. These folks have a drive-thru lot! We saw one other of these while walking today, but it wasn't quite as obvious that you could cut through the property.

Obviously this neighborhood is not high on the "Undergrounding Schedule" for our local power supply company. Can you see the Marine Layer coming onshore from the West?

We walked out onto the main street and found some shade.

and some Hibiscus(es).

A very large house, shielded by these old pepper trees. The main thoroughfare in our college campus (a few blocks away) was called Pepper Tree Lane.

Across the street there's the great piece of Art that was installed when the tree broke in a storm.

BTW, here is the triple garage of the house with the split tree. Sorry I am blocking most of your view. This was taken 2 years ago when I first got my C8 Corvette (before I sold it). Today all three doors were open and a fellow was working on a garage door pillar. I asked if it was his house -- he laughed and said "If I lived here I wouldn't be working on my garage door, would I?  I could pay some other poor schmuck (like me) to do it."

I really like this house -- it has a 25,000 sq ft lot (about 4 normal lots) and a huge pool with gardens. About $5 million!

My front view picture was wonky, so here's one I found on the web.

Another grand house, about a block away from the last one.

Now a dramatic shift to the California Ranch.

Long, low, and lower-budget.

This place probably had too many kids and the owners couldn't fit into the original house. It's now a compound.

Something completely different - almost a Spanish Mission Church look!

We liked the look of this,

and these concrete pillars with an angel on top (sorry not clear photo of the angel).

One more California Mission Style dwelling. Red tile roofs look great but are troublesome when old and the tiles begin to break and fall off.

This long low house is 50's almost an adobe; combination block and stucco construction. I like this - my father-in-law's house was built this way.

Finally, for people who like to live in glass houses where everything you do in your front room can be seen from the street! My front room is something like this but ours is 80 feet back from the sidewalk, and this house is no more than 20 feet from the street (but it's a quiet remote street).

We managed to meet a lady who was gardening in her front yard, and after 15 minutes talking discovered she and I went to the same college, the same years (69-73) but never met. Small world.

I hope you enjoyed today's walk. We did see a couple hummingbirds but I only had my iPhone and couldn't get them on camera.

Cheers,

Cazalea
