Some thoughts on the Girard-Perregaux 1966 Date and Moon Phase, Ref 49545

a watch we have hardly discussed here is the last years release of a simplified moon phase watch from GP in the 1966 Steel case.
Instead of a Full Calendar, you only have the Moon Phase and the Pointer date. It is lacking the month and the day display.
Instead the Brand printing has been a bit enlarged when compared with the Full Calendar in Steel. Several features I like about the Steel versions:
No "automatic" on the dial
The laser-cut indexes
The larger date font, which just gives more presence to the moon phase as well.
40mm Steel case with see0-through case back and inside is the workhorse GP Caliber 03300-0118.
Here is a side-by-side shot with the 44mm Steel 1966 Time and Date.
On the Wrist, I like what I'm seeing. I think a very attractive moon phase watch that is attractively priced as well.

Thanks Luis. I don't think the moon phase cut out
is actually any larger than on the Full Calendar gold models, but with circular date cut-out and the larger numbers make it appear bigger.

even without the weekday / month indicators still very attractive.
This model is (almost!) perfect for me. The equilibrium of the dial is much more interesting here than the triple date one in my opinion. The sub date/moonphase dial has a perfect size too
May be just two questioning: 1/ Its case size (40mm). May be 38mm or 39mm would have been better and 2/ The second hand. As I'm not a big fan of central second hand vs sub second dial, I would have preferred just a two hands.
Nothing really significant of course but as VC says: Do better if possible and that is always possible 😉

I guess it will come down to personal taste. I find 40mm just right for this watch and I would feel strange if the seconds hand would be absent 
I think you know how to remove the second hand
Even how to put a little cap on that arbor. Or perhaps did your year in watch school convince you to keep your hands off your own watches?

It's the second hand I would like to remove. Something I could do for sure. Even put it back if needed
And you're right. I could "play" with $50 timepieces. But not with $10,000++ ones 😉

If any change, my personal taste would be - larger Moon Phases, smaller date numbers...

the absence of Day and Month also makes it easier to set for people like us with many watches.
