Girard Perregaux

Two Girard-Perregaux Chronographs – Ref. 4946 and Ref. 49585

It is interesting to see these two chronographs side-by-side as they show the evolution of the design over a period of 10 years.

The Ref. 4946 (left) was introduced in 1999 and made until 2002. The case measures 38mm x 13mm and houses the Cal. GP3370 automatic chronograph. The long curved lugs help it to wear larger than the case measurements would suggest.

The Ref. 49585 (right) was introduced in 2010 into the Classic Elegance line and was superseded last year. The new Hawk Chronograph now holds the place of sports chronograph in the GP range.

It is characterised by the enlarged “12”, the removal of “Automatic” and “Manufacture” and the addition of “GP” on the dial. The larger 40mm x 12.8mm case makes the watch a little bolder on the wrist. Inside eats the Cal. GP0337A flyback chronograph but it is now hidden behind a solid case back.

Both watches provide an attractive vintage-styled design with modern reliability and dimensions. Girard-Perregaux at their best.

And a change of light shows how the dials come to life. Beautiful.
