I was just speaking about engraving a potential watch

The concept looks very cool. I can definitely see myself doing engravings in the future, a great way to commemorate special memories. Is this available through JLC boutiques?

Thanks Nico, for keeping us aware of such services.
As for me, I wonder what they can do to a Sun Moon.
As much as I would have loved a personalised enamel for
the two SMs I have for my sons.
And to get an enamel anyware except at the back of the watch,
would loose it's charm. IMO.

Then, if you want an enamel, you would have to consider:

1/ A Reverso with an enamel dial, like the latest one.

2/ A Reverso with a solid case back, like the TT 1931 or any other " simple " one.

This is the only time I wish my SM had a solid caseback.

AFAIK, it is not possible for two reasons:

1/ You delete all the ref  numberso f the watch. It will be impossible to identify it.

2/ More important: If you put an " enameled decorum " on the back of the carriage, you directly expose it to your skin, then you take the risk to damage it ( the ename, not your skin ).

You are right about damaging the enamel if it was under the carriage.
I was thinking if it is possible to have a small engraving of
the kid's chinese zodiac sign. One dog and the other a pig.

That's a wish I don't think the AD in Calcutta could help me with.

Jim and Seth at BHB as wife was thinking about engraving her name on the back of the TT1931US...

Seth then brought up enameling as well. WoW, we were moved.

The only downside is the amount of time the new piece will be away from us.

BUT isn't it worth it?

I think I know why you want this TT 1931 to be personalized, and I have to agree with your reasons.

It is noe fo the best reasons in the word, then it is worth some " time sacrifices ", don't you think?

If I got you well, you don't have the watch, already. Ask Seth if it is not possible to do it immediately, before the delivery of your watch.

It will be a bit longer, but it may also be the best solution.

I was playing with the Reverso personalization last nite - the possibilities are endless.

 

Would be really interested to see some real-life examples. Anyone personalized their Reverso?  Do post and share them.

And I don't think a majority of people will do so.

The first and most important condition, IMO, is that the watch is a keeper, I mean that you won't sell it:

A personalisation is important for you, for the members of your family, rarely for others.

But, if you offer more solutions to personalize your watch, and if you're sure it will stay in the family, then I think that this kind of service will be more often used.

then I most definitely agree with you, we won't see many people personalizing their Reverso.

If I do get it however, I do intend to keep it within the family and wish I would never have to face a situation of selling it.

It would also be interesting for JLC to do a series of boutique editions with engravings/enamelling on the normal models. Although we have seen in the past, many beautiful Reverso enamel paintings, unfortunately its always restricted to high end, precious metal and limited editions which basically makes it out of reach for the average guy.

Allow me to fantasize....design collaboration with popular artist; for example maybe a series of Pop Art images from Andy Warhol.

Maybe they could do an online vote where everyone can put a request and see which idea gets the most votes. That would be fun.

I just came back form a one day trip abroad, and I didn't have the time to answer you, but I will tomorrow.

I just received from my contact at JLC some precious informations on what it is possible to do on the Reverso, and what is not possible to do.

Give me a pair of hours to translate it in English.

I just contacted my AD and I am very happy with the price for the TT, below my expectation which is always good.

The final will be the WRIST TEST

 

Master Chrono vs Reverso TT......but I think where my heart leans on

...and even then, it has to be of a certain thickness, since the case back needs to be "dug out" if you will, to create a bas relief to contain the enamel.  Apparently steel is too hard for this process, though it can be lacquered instead.

And from the Master Enameler Miklos Merczel Himself:

- Only the Rose Gold and the White Gold cases can be enameled, because it is the only material to stand a 800° heating, without breaking, nor seeing its original case getting out of shape.

- The thickness of the metal is also very important: To enamel a piece, you first have to dig into the metal and remove 6/10 of it, hence the impossibility to enamel a standard sized Reverso, the carriage being 0, 85 mm thick.

You need a carriage which is AT LEAST 1 mm thick, which is the Case on the Grande Reverso Enamel, the Granbde Taille Enamel, and the " Eclipse ".

JLC didn't try, yet, to enamel the back of the carriage ( the part which is in contact with the wrist ), BUT this can be discussed with the final owner.

- As for the engraving, for the carriage, due to the shape of this piece, it will only be machine made.

- If a client wants more colors on his SS Reverso, this will be done thanks to the use of a laquered engraving, not the enamel, for the reasons explained above.
