My new purchase
I should have done it a long time ago, but I finally bought a few of these acylic watch stands from the bay for about 2 bucks each. Here are the results which I quite like. Hope you like them as well.

Interesting that the escape wheel jewel also has shock protection.
Does anyone know why? Is there something particular about this movement that makes this necessary?

Shock protection involves a cap jewel and moveable hole jewel in combination that are held in place by a spring to allow some shifting out of position during a shock. The escape wheel on the JLC caliber in question has what is called a Duofix setting, where the cap jewel is held in place by a similar spring, but the hole jewel is fixed. This is simply a convenient way to hold the cap jewel in place and allow it to be removed during cleaning.
