A couple of months ago I decided to polish my JLC at the local service centre. The polish was only around $100 but you are required to perform a minor service as part of the process (another $300) as they needed to remove the movement from the case. Sounds somewhat plausible so I agreed and had the added bonus of getting a nice box travel case to take the watch home in.
I don't really wear my Polaris that much as it seems to attract a lot of scratches but I finally pulled it out a week or so ago. Humm looking at face I noticed my dial appeared scratched...not great. Thankfully on closer inspection it was just some fibres that must have got in during the service (a red and a white one...). Honestly not the best QA but no big deal. They have a resident watchmaker in Singapore so I figure it would be like an hour to pop open the case get the fibres removed and my watch would be as good as gold.
Rang ahead to confirmed the watch maker was there before heading into town. Battled peak hour traffic and finally arrived but to my surprised was notified the watchmaker was on holidays...Hang On..I just called. Apparently their concierge isn't based in the boutique so gave me the wrong information. Humm this little adventure was becoming less "no big deal" and slightly annoying. I leave my watch there anyway awaiting his return. A week passes and I get a phone call. I was informed they noticed noticed the crystal (it's actually Plexi but didn't really want to explain this to them) is scratched so we need to quote for a replacement. I mention I just want the fibres removed and I can deal with the scratch myself (Polywatch/Toothpaste). They now suggest they are worried they will crack the "crystal" during the process of removing the fibres they deposited in the first place and will proceed to get me a quote on a replacement.
I'm writing this little post wondering how this is going to progress. I have a perfect plexiglass still in the box but honestly I have no interest in using it. I don't mind a scratch or two on my watch which easily can be removed myself. I'm hoping they are not going to quote me some crazy price for a replacement plexi I don't want in order to just remove fibre from a botched polish job...but somehow I don't see it going that way.
We shall see.
