Richard Mille

There is always a buzz around the Richard Mille booth at the SIHH fair; you always know something new in haute horologie is going to happen, and this year was no different. The wow factor watch was the RM038 sports tourbillon. This time designed for golf, and this watch will grace the arm of 'Bubba' Watson, the man with the longest drive on the PGA tour. A ferious drive that has real implications for the watch on the wrist. Hence, this watch comes designed with a strap for the central column to hold the hands in place! Seems far fetched, but this has been shown to occur on non-stress tested watches.


















The case of the RM038 is made of an extremely rugged and light magnesium alloy classified as AZ91, composed of magnesium combined with aluminum and zinc plus additional trace metals. The resulting magnesium alloy is more than the sum of the parts, providing a light yet extremely strong material with a dendritic internal crystalline structure making it suitable for extreme applications in the aerospace, telecommunication and automotive industries. As with most esoteric alloys, there is a long machining phase, the case is then given an electro-plasma treatment named Titalyt II®, covering the surface with a layer of white, crystalline ceramic oxide containing a high ratio of resistant composites. This biocompatible treatment provides an additional layer of high wear and corrosion resistance to the surface of the case’s already extreme specifications. The tripartite case is assembled with 12 spline screws in grade 5 titanium and abrasion resistant washers in 316L stainless steel, with the structural water resistance to 50 meters ensured by two Nitril O-ring seals.

Great releases this year IMO!

The profile shot of the circular RM033 wasn't what I expected it to be, so I hope it fits good on smaller wrists because the case now looks larger than I thought it would be.  I fear the lugs may overextend my wrist on my wimpy 6.75" wrist. 

Did you try the RM33 on your wrist Andrew?  If so, how did it fit?

wrist, as any RM, with exacting comfort.  You will notice that the back of the watch is curved and this helps to contour the watch around the wrist.  It should fit your wrist and would look stunning as a dress watch.

RM030 got my preference ... But that was before I saw pictures of the 38: this is just an amazingly looking watch, with great innovations: True RM DNA!!!

Any further model to be released this week ;-) I noticed there are lots of numbers between 33 and 38 ;-)))

Richard.  Golf audience is huge, and he has strapped his watch (and reputation) to the hardest hitting golfer on the PGA.  Should be fun to see how Bubba Watson plays with the RM038.  Look what the RM027 did for Nadal!

Either I'm broadening my horizons or.... RM is getting 'more classic'. I am not an RM fan, but I think I could wear this simple one.... maybe it's all the 'air' around the movement, letting all that 'techincality' breathe... a bit...

RM is at the cutting edge of technology, his watches have a classical simplicity to them: a belief that no matter what you subject the watch to, the watch has chronometric precision.  Take a look in the local dealer!

The RM038 is mindblowing in its simplicity and artistic interpretation! The RM033 is a nice direction for those who are more comfortable with round watches and the movement is awesome with the micro rotor,enabling such a thin profile.As Anthony mentioned, hope it can adapt to smaller wrists - but I have a feeling it will,as the potential growth market will dictate.The other two will be good alternatives and offer variety to the RM010.

Like the 009 AluSiC, the tubular 012 or the 027 Nadal, the 038 is for me the best part of Richard Mille, ultra light, ultra high tech "skeletonised" tourbillon. Fabulous!

The 030 is big beast, for those who appreciates the 011 it is a perfect complementary watch. The 029 is the New Classic.

The 033 is a complete surprise ! Thin, nice caliber, quite elegant and so modern and typical of RM at the same time. I am not into Roman Numbers on Ricahrd Mille Watches but all the rest is fantastic !

RM line - not just the new pieces that I showed live pictures of.  The WOW factor was obviously the RM038, and with good reason, but there is more choice across the dive watches, the automatics, the ultra-thins, and choice is a good thing!  Take a look at the new RM website.
