Just come back from Dubai, I was quite excited to visit the Mall there as there is the recently opened RM boutique to visit.
Very dissapointed indeed, they had an RM003, a Perini, but then the rest of what was there was made up of just 'blinged' RM10's and RM7's. lots of diamonds in differant versions, didnt even have an RM11 on display. Is this the way RM is going?, following on from another thread about the various colours on the RM11, it seems RM is going more 'fashion & bling' conscious than maybe it once used to.
For me I am not quite with the direction of RM nowadays, the new models and blinged up 'older' models seem to be taking the Company in the direction of costume jewellery, havent seen anything to touch my RM002. It also seems the forum is going a lot quieter, whereas it was buzzing when the RM11 came out...does that indicate that most watch enthusiasts such as myself are not overly impressed with the new stuff?, they havent created much of a buzz at all
a RM watch. At the time I had a strong reaction against it, but now I dont know. Some people actually like the precious stones adorning the case. I think it against the RM ethos of watches with pure function, no frills, but in some markets, precious stones are seen differently according to custom and it is probably to the taste of consumers in Dubai.
That said, your comments could equally be levelled at Audemars (ROOS series), or Patek (Nautilus), and Richard is probably moving with a trend that is being 'demanded' by consumers (demanded in the sense that the watches sell!).
RM continues to produce at least one leading new piece a year and has done so consistently for the past 10 years of operation. For such a small outfit, that is moving at considerable pace. However, that said, I think some of the newer pieces have lost some of the WOW factor, but that might be because we have been so consistently wowed in the past. I think a new direction is needed, and Richards forte is definitely in the high end complicated line, but I have every belief that the near future will contain a new WOW direction.
It could be that perhaps some of us, myself included, get a little jaded at the constant new pieces by nearly all watch firms, the hyperbol of the press releases that are generally over the top, and the only real 'new' element is a new colour bezel or face.
Thanks for the comments
