Horological Meandering

I have heard unconfirmed rumor that George Daniels has passed, if so it is a very sad day for the horological world.. Without his inspiration, I doubt I would be the watchmaker I have become / am becoming, and hope that the Smith/Daniels collaboration is completed in his memory without any hiccups..

I still remember the first time that a fellow watchmaker lent me his copy of Watchmaking, explaining to me that what I had got myself in to was a dying trade, and that Mr Daniels was one of the last "real" watchmakers, and I am so glad that this has been proven wrong so many times..

I would like to hope that Mr Daniels is still alive and that the rumor is unfounded, and if it is will be deleting this, ...

Was hoping it wasn't the case, I would have liked to meet him, possibly chat over tea and biccies.. I'll just have to double the time I'd like to spend with Roger, at least it sounds like he went peacefully, and has lived a one and fruitful life.. 

it is very sad and this year seems to be a bad year for watchmakers where we seem to have lost several.

I often wondered why his superior coaxial escapement was not adopted with open arms by watch brands other than Omega. 

A real giant in the field, gone.

Rest well, Mr. Daniels.

... in terms of his influence and inspiration for many watchmakers, in the co-axial movement, in a few special handmade watches and in his writings. It's a pleasure to own several of his books.

Sad, but also a great life lived.

Without Mr. Daniels book Watchmaking the chances that I would have started out with my watchmaking would have been infinately smaller. 
I had the great honour of meeting Mr. Daniels once at a BHI event.
The world has lost a great craftsman and a gentleman.
He will remain in our memory.

The late Mr George Daniels, CBE, FSA had a shaky start in life; he later found that officially, he had not been born. There was no birth certificate as he was begat out of wedlock and his parents did not register the fact.

His jouney through Time is now legendary and of course, as an English watchmaker and gentleman, his was a great innings.

George Daniels...he is and will be remembered as one of the greatest minds. 

Sad to hear. He was an inspirational figure, and I enjoyed watching his youtube interview from the PeoplesArchive project-
