if the choices were limited to comparable market positions in their respective fields.
I also tend to agree with PPlater in everything but his conclusion - most of these types of comparisons are based on marketing perceptions, handed to us by the marketing departments who themselves know very little to nothing about the actual product, less on the actual products themselves.
This is a bit like asking which is better, the Cliff Notes version of Jane Eyre or the Spark Notes version of Wuthering Heights...

...the answer rather depends on the assumptions inherent in the question. For example, those who drive Rolls Royce, Jaguar, Bentley, Lincoln or even Lexus, perhaps, might quibble with the proposition that Audi, Merc and BMW are the 'big three' for the purposes of this exercise.
For the sake of playing along, though, you might think that AP might be likened to Ford: a proud history, a great back catalogue, some sensational pieces over the years at the very top of the model line but w-a-a-a-y too many options, special models and limited editions at the bottom of the model range....
